View Full Version : GSR All Motor Build Questions

Well since i got the GSR motor, i decided to go all motor and just be patient in building it. I went out and bought a engine stand and now its up on there. My goal is 175-200whp and from reading the posts on here a bout the Sir build that it seems that a good combo is the JDM ITR pistons and Skunk2 stage 2 or JDM ITR Cams.

My Plans:
- Skunk2 Stage 2 Cams or
JDM ITR Cams

- JDM ITR Pistons
- ITR Inner and outer springs w/ retainers.

Possibly Eagle rods.

Here are a few questions:

1. Is it possible to run JDM ITR camshafts using the stock GSR Valve springs and not suffer from valve float? Ive heard that if i dont want to run to 8500rpm i can keep them.

2. For the ITR Inner and Outer Valve Springs, do i need to purchase the retainers for the dual valve springs or will they work with the stock gsr retainers? Also i cannot seem to find ITR Retainers anywhere, anyone?

3. Also i am considering purchasing ITR Valves, i think they are 32% lighter.

The only head milling i will do is just enough to clean up the surface, so i have less stress on piston-valve contact. Say maybe .013"

My goal is too have a nice high rpm powerband pull to redline (8100) I am staying with the stock GSR Tranny w/ a Exedy Stage 1 Clutch and 8.8lb Chromoly Flywheel.

As for traction, Falken Azensis mounted on 16" rota slips.

I am in no rush to get this motor done, i want to do it right and have a great , strong runnin motor....

the last question, while installing piston rings ( i am going with oem honda rings) I am not quite sure how to line the rings up , im not sure what the gaps in the rings are called but im confused on how to....

Thanks for any help..
Brian

My goal is 175-200whp

Thats a good bit of power.....be prepared to drop some $$.....the engine will definatly need to come apart for that....as you are aware....

Question #1.

If you stay under 8500rpm you can keep what you have. Even if you upgrade cams.

Question #2.

As far as I know....b16 series and b18 series are all the same part # IIRC.

Question #3

I wouldn't bother with buying lighter valves. If you plan on milling the head for a bigger set yes, otherwise save your $$.

Get a cheap Haynes manual...and look @ the questions on the rings...

Also we have SEVERAL GREAT WRITEUPS in the Powerplant section concerning engine builds......check it out...you won't be sorry..... 8)

If you are going to shot for 175-200 hp you need to sleeve your block. 2.0 85 mm at least. But if you are going to be more realalistic like 150-175 hp you can order cast pistons from acura like the ctr 12.5-1 81 mm pistons. Dont even wast your money on after market rods for these because they wont fit. You will have to get the factory rods milled down to fit because they are even to big. The cams you will need are a set of mix match cams one being ctr the other being itr. Set of head studs, cometic head gasket, new bearings, valve seals, and get rid of that piece of shit gsr intake. Get a skunk 2 intake atleast. The valves wont need messed with. At least not with these cams. Been there done this trust me it works just fine.

ctr pistons 275.00- 325.00
cams 500.00-600.00
cometic gasket -89.00
bearings 100-150.00
valve seals 50-75.00
arp head studs 125-150.00
new intake 300.00-400.00

Sleeving your block for 200hp? Thats the last of your worries......Unless you plan on running that amount of nitrous...but I didn't catch that...and I prolly wouldn't recomend that much Compression with Nitro.....

I know the ITR cams from inlinefour are 98 spec r cams. And i guess the same goes for the 98 jdm cams....

importhorizon does not list the years.

8) yea i really wouldnt worry about sleeving your block... after talking with my friends im not even gonna need to for 300hp.. they said i should think about getting some block guards but thats all... 8)

I have heard several mixed reviews on block gurards...the majority of the poeple say not worth the $$$.

Brian,

I can't remember my cam specs so help me god....I would recommend you take a trip on over to http://www.honda-tech.com

I have learned a great deal from there...and plus they have an awesome search function...

Good luck, keep us posted buddy.... 8)

i heard that bockguards were a good idea on higher hp cars, because they keep the stock sleeves from swaying.

What i've read:

<250 hp - stock
300 hp - block guard
>350 hp - sleeves

this is all general of course, because every engine is different and their uses are different.

Well i think i might go with Skunk2 Stage2 Cams. I am going to call Skunk2 and find out if the ITR springs can handle stage 2 if im not reving past stock redline.

As for the bottom end. I am staying with the stock GSR Block Girdle, rods and staying with my JDM ITR Pistons giving me a 11.3:1 compresssion Ratio.

If the ITR Springs cannot handle the stage II cams, i guess ill have to dump more money into skunk2's valvespring kit and keep the stock gsr retainers.

I am only going to have the head milled just enough to clean up the surface, i am not going to risk piston-valve contact here, just enough, maybe .013"

I am still in a dilemma, over honda rings or get aftermarket ones.

As for tuning i will be going with Apexi's VAFC-II. once i get it all together, and go through an engine break in period to let the new rings seat properly, i will be driving to dynamic motorsports and gettin this baby dynotuned...

If you are using stock rev limiter, stock springs will work.
