1. Steer clear of the porn
2. Make sure you use a popup blocker. I suggest browsing with Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com). It is the best browser out there, and has built in popup blockers, among other treats. I've been using it for 2 years now, since beta, and haven't found anything that compares.
3. Adaware, or similar spyware cleaner (Search & Destroy)
4. If these don't work, try Easyclean, or similar registry cleaner
5. Steer clear of the porn
Last night was a bad night, anyway. 30 minutes after I got my computer set up in my new apartment, my harddrive crapped itself; hardware failure. I guess all the moving around the last few weeks took its toll on my drive. The suck part is, I had plans to back everything up today/this weekend; but now... everything is lost.

you having a virus that won't alow you to get onto the internet sounds like the BlasterVirus... the only way i found out to fix it is to turn on your firewall... it won't allow it to run, also like greg said.. use Ad-ware to get rid of any spyware you might have.. 8)

I have never seen Avg miss a virus.....are you sure you are keeping it updated...??
Seems strange....also some viruses it sees but can't remove b/c they attached themselves to system files and are protected b/c they are being used @ the time...so you have to manually remove them....it could have notified someone and then disapeared and you see it, assuming it was not caught..... 8)

pshaw... you don't have to steer clear of the pron to not get a virus just don't be daft. Run Ad-Aware, and Spybot Search & Destroy daily, as well as daily virus scans and hard disk defrags. Set your system to clear the cache, temporary internet files and cookies on exit, and clear the page file on shut-down/restart.
Oh yeah fyi
1. Use Internet Explorer
2. Casually view pr0n
3. 2 minutes later get 300 pop-ups, 2 viruses, an ActiveX exploit, and a JavaScript hack.
4. Computer Dies
OR
1. GET ANOTHER BROWSER
--Avant (http://www.avantbrowser.com/download.html) Looks Like IE, Tabbed Browsing, Pop-Up Blocker, uses IE Rendering Engine that's IT (that meants it has ActiveX Support)
--Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/en/download.htm) What Greg is always touting, tabbed browsing etc.
--Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) Basically the newest version of Netscap kinda thing. Decent VERY Clean looking, tabbed Browsing & all
--Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) Tabbed Browsing, RSS/XML Support, Pop-Up Blocking, Built in Google Search, EXTREMELY Flexible, Fastest Browser on earth. Mouse Gestures too!!
2. Browse pr0n
3. NO PROBLEMS

Of course. But then again, if you look @ it from a logical point of view most pr0n sites are simply embedded images/video. You just need to turn off the extra "Features" that are embedded in IE to do it safely, and you can even use IE, just need to have some extras like disabling window generation /spawning, either via regsitry edit or Google Toolbar etc.
Seriously though any of the browsers I listed will seriously blow IE out of the water, whether stability issues or speed, or features & interactivity.
Hell the newest version of Opera has VOICE COMMANDS. If you're super frickin' lazy you can simply TELL your computer where to browse....

I can see it now..."take me to movFast.com bitch"
Don't call Firefox a "new version of netscape" since they aren't the same. Netscape switched to using the Mozilla cores as a base a few years ago. Firefox is based off the Mozilla core now, but its a very stripped down version of it (ie- doesn't have all the crap you don't need).
Download Ad-Aware, SpyBot, MS-Adware, and scan the shit out of your computer. AVG isn't the best sometimes. Turn system restore off, reboot, scan. Half the viruses today will copy themselves to your system restore, so after you delete the first copy and reboot, the system restore version spreads it again.

hey kak... bugger off. I didn't state that Firefox WAS Netscape. I stated
Basically the newest version of Netscap kinda thing
There's a difference, but it's ok I know you're anal retentive and detail oriented just like me. I realize the statement isn't entirely correct and I could bother myself to look up the entire history of the Netscape & Mozilla /Firebird/Firefox programs, but I honestly don't give a shit, and I'm not going to waste my time doing so.
So be content and realize I don't really care what you think. I kinda group Mozilla/Netscape & Firefox all together, they're all kissing cousins anyways.

my computer has been acting gay lately too....my innerweb is like 56k type speeds and it's upsettting me greatly. I downloaded adaware, some other program and scanned the crap out of my computer but they come up empty. I tried all of the above browsers, some are even slower than IE...Opera was the worst....I even tried the Winsock fix, but to no avail....

I think it's some sort of problem with the DNS side of things.

Someone has a problem being proved wrong. Sorry for clearing up facts when everybody knows that Netscape is bloated crap and you correlated it with Firefox. Don't be vague next time.
narfdanarf - Go to http://www.dslreports.com and do a speed test (under tools). See how your connection is doing. What ISP do you have.. some are pretty shitty (Adelphia).

hmmm my results were 223 down and 88 up....which is gay cause i have Charter's high super high connection whatever that is.
Are you using XP SP2? It would tell you if any programs are accessing your internet (ad/spy-ware or virii).
Call charter tomorrow (run the speed test while you're on the phone w/them to comfirm the problem) and have them reset your modem via their database and then ping it to make sure your speed is ok. Retest while talking to them.
