My brother's 90' 240 sx has a battery drainage problem. It is on its 2nd battery in 3months and this one is dead now too. Its not the alternator and there is no audio equipment in the car so amps are draining the paower. Any ideas?

I thought he let his ex g/f keep that?

He could just go down to Advance Auto and they can run a check on his charging system, and see what the problem is.

How do you know its not the Alt? Did he go get it checked out at a shop? It can put out the right voltage and still be bad. Something might be bleeding it off though like a wire crossed somewhere. One way to check is to hook up a ampmeter to see if something is draining it and to isolate start pulling fuses.

if it was the altenator then the power wouldn't drain when the car is off right?

Not always...bad ground, short.....its leaking off into the car....like Dave and Justin said.....you need to isolate the problem.... 8)

This is a good idea. If you need an amp meter, you can borrow mine. Better yet, come over and I'll lend a hand.

When the car is running, check your output on the alternator with a voltmeter. It should be up in the 14's. If not, then you need a new one. Otherwise you may have a short (parasitic load) such as a glovebox light or a trunk light not turning off.
