View Full Version : a question for the honda guru's
for countless years ppl have been buildin V8's.. be it boring them, stroking them, de-stroking them, getting an excessively big cam and mating an intake which performs the best in the same range as the cam they selected.
Is it not possible to build a healthy all-motor civic, say a 1.6 dohc? or sohc even for that matter.. im not sure what kind of power you could get from a N/A 1.6 but yuo would think if you had it sleeved an were runnin pistons that were .30 oversized or perhaps .60, had the head and intake ported an polished, and a good sized cam, combined with a nice header with the x-over pipes into a free flowing exhaust w/out a cat.. then you should be able to get some decent performance out of it no?
basically what im asking is does anyone know what the 1.6 is capable of w/out forced induction while still being streetable

One reason its not done very often....$$$
All the parts you listed cost big bucks, and you can destroy that with the same engine being boosted and only using half the $$$.
Standard b16 is 81mm, I think you can bore it with sleeves around 84.5mm
Itr or Ctr pistons net you around 11:5 or even some have gone 12:1. Any more than that and you are risking severe detonation without race gas.
Skunk2 Stage 4 or 5 cams and a p&p'd polish head....
With that you could easily see mid 13's......maybe even high 12's with slicks and a gutted hatch...remember...power to weight is everything in a Honda....
Good power is easlily attainable...just not cost effective.... 8)
11.5 to 1 is a high compression ratio for street gas.. im runnin 10.5 in my car which is about as high as i'd wana go. what compression ratio pistons come stock in a civic?
arent pistons and cams like insane priced for honda motors?

Itr's are in the 11:x range......
I think my Si is something like 10:6 or 10:2 or something...I forget....
Pistons prices vary...for a forged unit...yea...stock...cheap....
For Nos...forged would be your friend....4 life....
Good place to search for info is http://www.honda-tech.com
Great search option...you can learn ALOT there..... 8)

My car runs 11:1 all the time. It's a matter of the right parts that you are using and how well they are going to work together. Like adam said, forced induction ends up being cheaper in the long run for the amount of power gain you are going to recieve. BUT if you want to build an all motor, I totally respect and would be willing to help
eh.. i got offered an si' for an exceptionally reasonable price.. one of those hard to pass up kinda deals. wouldnt mind keepin it, just kinda lookin into all the options ya know.
