As some of you know my 2003 Evolution VIII has had transmission problems. I have already had my clutch, flywheel, front bushings, second & fifth, as well as the synchros replaced....WELL after all of that my transmission started grinding in fourth and fifth!!! I drove Robbies EVO and other than the new down pipe I really couldnt help but notice how smooth his transmission shifted, then he drove mine and to say the least can vouch for me...So I went to the dealership and asked if I could have someone drive the car to see if they would replace the tranny...They reffered me to the Mitsubishi Representative, after some investigative work I figured out that the Rep for our area no longer is involved with Mitsubishi, so I had the garage foreman drive with me and sure enough the transmission had a very dramatic performance of just how messed up the tranny had become...to say the least he was dissatified and got the car into the shop immediately and got me set up with a rental car (Cam, Adam  )...
So its sitting now waiting to get ripped apart...I have a question though:
Will a 6 speed tranny from the MR conform to the '03 evo setup??
( I made sure to have them look into this and that i would be willing to pay the difference 8) )

I would assume so....it would be a question of the axles working or not, since I do believe that the mr has an lsd in the front......
Keep us posted bro.... 8)

Don't pay for squat. For the problems your car has had, get the stock tranny back in. Tell (not ask) them that a complete transmission is needed. If they balk..then bring out the long list of probs you've had with that car and that it seems that either they don't know how to fix things or they barely did anything in the 1st place.
If you upgrade to the newer MR one ...they'll have a good reason to void your warranty on anything driveline related. Would look like a great way out for the dealership! "this guy pays for it, and any future probs will be voided" don't do this Jordan.
Its good to be nice to dealerships BUT, a wise service manager can really make it difficult and you can potentially lose out on some $$ repairs.
. Plus, because of your age (just being honest here) they'll take advantage of the "I know more cause I'm older thing" (of which i totally hate). If they won't replace your tranny or COMPLETELY fix the probs....get some help. Have a parent or 2 involved, and perhaps get legal on them if necessary.
If you really want the 6 spd. ..sell your current EVO and get a STi...opps I meant a EVO MR.
Tell us what happens!!!

Ok enough about the link...it worked for me  and thats all that matters!! 8) ANYWAY....
Just got in the news...*drum roll plz*
They gave me the prices for the six speed and the five speed the 5 is $2,500 and the 6 is $4,600...
So then they told me they were going to just replace the whole transmission!!! It is a brand new tranny coming out of Atlanta..and it will be here next wednesday...**oh by the way that day would be Jan. 26th MY B-DAY!...pretty nice birthday present if you ask me!**
They said when they drained the transmission fluid they found metal shavings...Other than that they also informed me that my flywheel and pressure plate had various hot spots on it and they claimed that I was dumping the clutch...and since the last replacement I have done NO CLUTCH DUMPING!!! ask anyone who drive with me on a daily basis..(cam, or adam) Regardless the clutch will need to be replaced probably within the next six months...So the money I have been saving up for my turbo-back exhaust system will now be going towards a clutch...I will have the labor done for free and the clutch being bought at cost...but I am not sure which clutch to install???? The car is daily driven but it is going to have to withstand modifications....So this leads me to my new dilemma...Do I buy a twin disc or a heavy duty single disc??? Thank you for the responses so far...I appreciate the advise Davis!!thanx :P

I'd go with twin disc, but others may disagree.

I don't know much about Evo's....my only concern, and this is what I told Jordan: Being a daily driver, I would hate to have a stiff cluth to pedal each and every day...to me its not worth it...
Alas its Jordans choice....

Glad to hear that they'll replace the entire tranny. However, this is what they are suppose to do in your case..so don't be too thankful or nice to them. Your car has a warranty that you paid for and this tranny replacement falls under that.
If they think you have been dumping your clutch then whatever.....they cannot really prove it. (unfort, the clutch is seen as a wear and tear item and is harder to replace under warranty, although I know some Sti guys that have done it)
Anyways, if anything at all, make sure that they know this has been a real inconveience (sp?) to you and that you expect to be treated professionally. (don't let them get away with talking down to you because you are younger etc..) They ARE paying for your rental car too right? They better!
As far as the clutch. Are they offering to install it for free and paid at costs? If I were you I create a stink about it and lean on them to replace the clutch and the tranny like they should do. "I do not abuse my clutch" is as far as you need to explain it to them.
judgement call here:
if they get pissy about it...tell us (I can eloborate more on putting additional pressure, better business bureau etc..) and tell Mitisubishi of America of the un-professional ways you have been treated, give names of service people and manager.
Don't forget, you bought a car from them (or whoever), they are there to service it. That is what they do. It doesn't matter if your car is worth $1000 or $50K..they need to treat all the people the same and not make accusations that they cannot prove entirely.
Keep us filled in!

tell them that you think the bad tranny caused the clutch to go bad, and tell them they are going to need them to replace that too obviously

Well the are going to put in the clutch for free but not get a new clutch??(opinions?) I also have some pictures of the clutch and tranny if you want to see them they are in my grouper floder under "evo"(i apologize in advance about how blurry they are i was in a hurry)

Interesting pics of the internals of the tranny....always cool to see that.
The pressure plate does look like it has some spots on it...I know he hasn't launched it....but wondering if the higer boost makes it struggle to grab....creating hot places....
I hope he gets an upgraded clutch...or he is going to have this problem over and over...... 8)

I think Jordan went ahead and got a clutch...
BLUEVOVIII
01-23-2005, 12:58 AM
Yeh I went ahead bought a clutch...a ACT...its supposed to hold 479ft/lbs and 400+ horsepower...also to compliment the clutch I also purchased a Fidenza flywheel its approx. 8lbs...
Adam, Cam and I were watching a video of a 350z in idle revving and they bounced it off of the rev limiter...then they put a aftermarket flywheel...and it revved incredibly fast! So I guess I will have to adjust...

Ok, little update on the tranny....
I have been driving very conservative lately, only been taking her up to 5k if that....Ive gone through the gears relatively fast just to see about any grinding, and there wasnt any... :D
Anyway I was talking to the mechanic who replaced my tranny and he said he was suspicious when he went to order the tranny, b/c all the numbers had changed(part numbers) to a newer set of numbers which ussually means there were changes done to the newer 5 speed transmissions....
ill keep everyone posted if nething happens...worth noting.

im really interested in this autcross...my car has three diffrent powerbands...at about 2500 you get a decent pull at 3500 it launches hard and at about 4500 it feels like your entering hyperspace...but i dont think it will be all that beneficial at autocross..i think my only real saving grace will be the handling

AutoX is lots of fun. The next one is one Feb. 20th. There's a bunch of us that goes.
Check out these links for info on movFast AutoX'ers:
http://www.movfast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=134
We meet at the Rest Stop just south of Mineral Wells at 8:20. We LEAVE to go to the AutoX (Belle, WV) at 8:30. Please be on time. We use channel 5-5 to talk the whole way down and back. FYI, we are usually back in the PKB area at around 6:30-7.
If you want to watch but not race, let us know as we probably have a seat or 2 open.
If you have never seen an AutoX, its alot of fun to watch and even more fun to race in. It doesn't matter what type of car you have. In autoX, you will learn more about what you and your car can and can't do.... more than any other type of driving excerise or race. There are numerous beginners at every event. Its the safest (but not easiest) type of racing, and helmets are required. They have loner helmets at the course in case you need one.

I am glad to know they honored their warranty. I too have heard that there where changes made to the internals of the transmission between 03/04 to the 05 models. Please keep us posted as to if there is any truth to this. I have also heard that Mitsu will replace tranmissions with only rebuilt units and this may be the case for the different numbers. I sure hope they did not tell you, that you were getting a new tranny and then stuck you with a rebuilt unit. Although they are known for being a bit shady lately. Anyway, congrats on getting it handled and I hope this tranny holds up better then the last one....
