Alright I am negotiations with my mom about a first car. Looks like its gonna be a little over a hundred bucks a month for me to have my own car. So we began to talk about cars today, I have the choice between my brother’s 86' maxima and another car for under 2 grand. What should I do?
Things I want out of my car:
1) Good mpg
2) I would like to have the option of auto crossing it but not a priority
3) I want it to have a color that would look good with dark tint
4) Reliable and 4 door

an old honda of some sort....ok for autocrossing, good mpg, cheap insurance, cheap price, and what car doesn't look good with dark tint?

I agreee. Find some older Honduh accord or something. Pretty good mpg, very reliable and can carry some soccer buddies too.
As far as Autox..well...it doesn't really matter just as long as you do it. So many ppl like to think they drive fast yet have never tested themselves properly. (street racing or going 100mph on the street doesn't count and is foolish) If I were you, I'd Autox whatever car you have, but then bum shotgun rides in as many autoX cars as you can....you'll learn alot that way and will be far ahead of many people especially considering you are only 16 yrs. old. :)
Let us know what you get! And well done on getting your license!

Well if you had the choice between an old honda or and old maxima with adjustable shocks V6 and i think close to 200 horse (solid metal so its heavy but still) what would you do.....
I just think some colors look dumb with tint not necessarily cars.......B/C i dont think dark brown looks very good with tint...

Over-rated.....
Unlike civics right... Do you want to provide any information on WHY you say the corolla is over-rated, or were you just looking to keep that post count up? I think it would make an ideal first car. If you could find one, it'll come pretty cheap, you get the pleasure of RWD (unlike all the civic boys that'll spend 8 times the cash) I'm sure the insurance rates are low, the engine will out-live your grandchildren (exaggeration). And aftermarket parts are becoming more and more plentifull. Of course the easier thing to do would conform like everyone else and buy a CRX, but thats just not MY style (as I can't speak for Cam).. But, the Maxima isn't a bad idea, almost bought one before my Legend.
oh yeah 8)

yeah whatever you do, don't conform and get a CRX....you should just jump on the new el driftoo bandwagon and get a sweetass slorolla!

if i found a gts corrola, i would easily trade my hatch for it, those cars are easy to mod and it's not just about drift, i like the feeling of having a rear-wheel drive car, just my own personal preference, that is why i said he should look for one of those. I don't think i am on a bandwagon with my civic, it gets me from point a to b and is decently quick. it is completely stock down to the tailights. i didn't buy a civic to be on the bandwagon, i bought a honda for reliabilty, while i am in between cars.

yeah we know...other people are trashing the civic "bandwagon" and saying to jump on the other bandwagon....i was just trying to point out the irony of what he said.

I don't think I used the word "bandwagon," I don't think that civics are any fads or crazes, they've been around for a while now, and I don't think they're going to go anywhere. What you said was funny, I do think that drifting is more of a fad thing, that'll blow over within the next half-decade. But to have an old corolla would set you out from our LOCAL crowd That is populated by civics, neons, and cavaliers... Sorry for high-jacking the thread by the way.

I am not helping the situation by owning a civic.
I bought mine back in 98. Was a funny story actually, I didn't know anything about cars, and saw it. The deciding factor...it was red, my favorite color. I had heard Honda's were good for reliabilty, so that was a plus. Owned it for a few years before I even thought about doing anything, such as tint/wheels/etc.
Bought my second one b/c I liked the first one so much, I stuck with what I know....
Worked out so far.... 8)

ive owned about everything at one time or another
94 cavalier 4 door
87 wrangler
98 ranger splash
00 firebird
02 trans am
94 corvette
00 wrangler
02 wrangler
97 talon
of all these cars the talon has been the funnest thing ive ever driven ( when it works)...but for starting out you want something that you can drive to hell and back since it will be awhile till you get something else...and something reliable in your price range...this kinda limits the field. honda or nissans would be a good choice or a cavalier...when i got a new car i actually went out and tried to destroy the cavalier and it just wouldnt die

What about finding a mid 90's Nissan Sentra? I love those cars, seem to run for ever. We had one in the family. Sold it with over 400,000 miles on it. Same motor. Good mpg, and there is quite a bit available in aftermarket for them.
another idea for a car to buy.

I had a 93 maxima. Good car when it would run. It had a problem of shuting down while driving down the road. Tried everything never did get it fixed..
