No because if they go to production theyd put a cover over them like the tires now

i dont know if it mentioned this in the article or not but on the news story about them they said the only reason that tweels arent in production yet is because when you get over 50mph you get horrible noise from them.......

The idea seems good and all, but what about performance? How well, could they do cornering? With no sidewall, what kinda of traction are they going to provide with hard cornering?

I almost feel like they would corner better than regular tires, cause instead of rolling, it would seem like they have more support within the rest of the tire, and it would keep more surface on the ground.

they are also great for shock Absorption

i would think that moving at great speeds the would fold up under the stress...wonder what would happen if you went into a drift with them..could the hold up to pressure from the side?? seems like it would be easy to rip them apart if they got to much pressure at teh wrong angle

That's what I was thinking, I need to look up the math on friction circles again. I used to know that stuff. But I would be very concerned about cornering.
Has anyone ever driven in Detroit. The roads there are horrible. The on and off ramps alone would tear those to shreds.
I think they would be great for working vehicles of low speeds, but nothing to compare to for performance.

There's something you guys aren't taking into account here...these tires are designed to be BETTER than a regular tire in pretty much any way. There's nothing that says that a production version would definitely not have a sidewall. Polyurethane and and the other materials used in tweels are much more durable than rubber. All that Michelen would have to do to change the characteristics of the wheel (handling, response, shock absorption) would be something like thickening each of the spokes or adding more of them. The only real problem I can see now is not having the adjustability of a pressurized tire for performance driving. Maybe they could create a tweel that could also hold pressure for extra stiffness only when you need it..?

If you want to have something with sidewall and hold air that you don't have to worry about running over nails and flat tires, then you can just buy some things called runn flats. Rubber ring that goes in the tire that you can run it on with no air pressure. The Tweels theory is to have a reusable, economical, tubeless tire that the everyday person can use. I don't think these are going to be good for the performance user to own.
opinion, not based on any fact whatsoever.

I see what you're saying, but run-flats require a pressure monitoring system and can only go so far without pressure. It seems to me that if they wanted to make them better for enthusiasts they would just stiffen them up via one of the ways I mentioned earlier or by simply using materials with a higher durometer.
