Jay
03-07-2005, 04:34 PM
i dont think theyre copying anyone.. retro is in
the big 3 have been doin it in concept cars for the past few years

6.0 litre is the same one in the new GTO
it's the 400hp LS2 motor

yeah but it won't even be close to the concept. GM would never do something there customers wanted

lol good point..
'wow this looks great, its rwd, has an assload of power, and ppl seem to absolutely love it! ....hmm.... ok trash it, discontinue the cavalier name, then rebadge what we have on the assembly line with some Z28 badges an give it a V6 then let the ppl deal with it.. ppl will buy it cause theyre stupid'

That's a sexy looking car, but I guess I feel the same way about this as I do the new Eclipse. What about this car makes it a camero? the paint job?

I don't get why auto makers feel the need to continue a name of something when it is no longer the same. If the same motor or chasis/unibody is used then I can understand keeping the name and making it the next generation.

What do you all feel makes a specific model of car? What makes a Camero remain a camero? One of the few that I have seen maintain any kind of resemblance is the corvette.
What do you think?

I like the looks of that better than I do the new Mustang. But like you guys say it will probably never look like that when it goes into production.

Marketing... It is much easier to sell something that already has a history and large fan base. People WILL buy a car for its name.

That is computer made. We'll see how close it actually comes to that during production. Looks alright though!

Maybe Computer made, but they are getting better at producing closer to the original designs. Look at the pics of the new C6. Looks pretty darn good off the line. Very similar to the concepts.

and I don't care what kind of marketing it is. When they change an entire car they are no longer the same.

What about the Pontiac GTO, should have had a different name. Maybe related it to the GTO or put inspired by the GTO, but not called it the same thing. It is not the same car. Great performing car, doesn't look that good to me, but good power from the factory.
I just disagree with branding something that it is not.

It's like calling a pair of the Oakley Thump glasses and calling them A-Wires. Just because they are made by the same company doesn't mean that marketing should call them the same thing.

1st thing i noticed were the bodylines coming off of the top of both fenderwells which resembles the 69' Camaro, next up the general shape of the fender/quarter panel which has the arch up exactly like the 67-9. then the round headlights, along with the slinder grill which goes from light to light.

last thing i noticed was the paint..

here, ill post a pic of my 69' i sold an you tell me how you dont see anything similar

if they kept the GTO, to take place of the firebird name, and came out with the new camaro, based off each other of course, and the camaro having t-tops or what-not, and the GTO staying the way it is, then yes, they could probably make it work, Thats if the price is right. Having a base 6 cylinder model, only for the Camaro of course, probably the Gen III 3.8L supercharged most likely, which produces 240 HP (or so i've read) then having the LS2 in the Z-28 would probably work. If the price is kept around the price of the new mustang, then maybe they will have something working for them. Since that rendering didnt really have anything much to do with GM, I found this other picture, looks a little bit more convincing, but my eyes could be decieving me because im tired :P

That would be cool but GM is finally doing away with the 3.8 motor. Most of the cars that had the 3.8 sc will now have small block V8s.

InterceptorXR7
03-07-2005, 10:36 PM
Yeah, i heard about that, the new Monte Carlo's and Impalas will have a small 303 hp 5.3L V-8 with that Displacement on Demand and its still gonna be FWD  The 3.8 is a really good engine, i really do hate to see it go :( They have a new 3.9L VVT, that sounds nifty, maybe they can use that :P

In reference to the gold camaro picture... This photo has seen some photoshop, The car in the pic was originally a different color, and I'm almost 100% sure that the front plate that reads "camaro," is fake, along with the badge on the right of the car.
I do like the first, computer generated, car.

Jay

the gold camaro doesnt even look like a camaro.. it looks like a cross between the current gto and the cadillac xlr

Considering GM stated, years ago, that when they re-introduced the Camaro it would resemble the first gens, I fail to see how they're "copying" Ford.

Hopefully my wife will be finished with school and working by then, so we can afford the Tahoe and one of these...

I'd say if they roll with what I read, and have the SS model as the base model V8 it'll be in the mid 20's range, while the Z28 w/LS2 will be in the upper to low 30's range. And the V6 model? psh.. who cares

i like the first pic better too. i also hate to see the 3.8 liter leave the gm line, seems like everytime they have a good engine they stop production. i also hope that they make the camaro affordable, they always put the vette engines in them wich made them more expensive than the mustang, and a lot more expensive to work on, i think they could save some money by putting a high output 5.3 in it. it has proved to be a good engine and is capable of some good horsepower.

Jay
03-08-2005, 09:57 AM
yea i agree they need to stay around the mustangs price range. the fbody was stupid over priced.. why buy an SS when you could buy a C5 for allmost the same ammount of cash

That pic and two others have been out for at least a year and a half, the other two look better though, one is orange and one was a nice green with a billet grill

From what I have read at the gminsidenews site, I believe the re-introduced Camaro will be based on a Holden platform. Interesting... I've been thinking of picking up a '05 GTO when they begin hitting the used lots ( Don't need no stinking factory warranty ;) )

its kinda cool, definitely looks more like a "Camaro" than the last couple of generations. If GM cleans up a few of the body lines it would be a pretty cool production car, but I doubt GM will put out anything that looks remotely this cool.

And incase youre too lazy to click the link.. here goes

Camaro/Chevelle- Chevy has an all new sporty coupe set to debut in 2007 on the Zeta platform. This car is very similar to the 2007 GTO, with the exception of tighter styling. At this point the assumption is that this car will be the all new Camaro. There is however an outside rumor that this car may be hastily redesigned and given a more appropriate name such as Chevelle. Then GM would design a Camaro on an all new midsized RWD platform loosely based on a lengthened Kappa platform. This platform (rumored to be called "Beta") was first previewed in the Holden Torana TT36 concept shown at the 04 Sydney International Auto Show. This would slightly delay a Camaro to possibly 2008. Either way, we will keep you updated!

This is a post from a person who works for GM
-

First..........we do not invite Motor Trend or Road and Track or any other magazine into our product planning meetings.

So........take what you read in magazines with a grain of salt.....and then throw that grain of salt over your shoulder.

Now.....I gotta be careful here, and I can't say a lot.......but:

We KNOW Mustang continues to sell in sizeable numbers.....and we knew this several years ago.

There are reasons why the Camaro went on "hiatus" ...that word came directly from the press release when we announced the closing of Ste. Therese.

The Camaro nameplate is one of the top 5 most recognized nameplates in the industry......HUGE equity in the name.

NO CAMARO should ever have FWD. The very DNA of Camaro sez:

>Head turning style that's recognizable as a Camaro from a quarter mile......
>Class leading performance from available muscular V8s
>RWD
>Handling that makes the car stick to the road like velcro
>Chevy price

Now.......there's been tons of 'pictures' of the "new Camaro" and none of them are right.

I've said "keep the faith' at least a gajillion times..............

so let me say this: You should really consider coming to NAIAS in January of 2006 to look around...............

Now..........if that doesn't answer your question.....nothing will..

I would buy one if GM got the styling and platform right.
