What race tires do you guys recomend for both track and autoX? These do not have to be street leagle. COST IS AN ISSUE! I need a good balance between cost and performance.

I'm getting a set of Victoracers in a 245/40/17 or a 255/40/17. When? I just don't know:) My research:

The Kumho 700 and the V710 are very good AutoX tires but get eaten up pretty quick on AutoX and would have the suckage on the track. The new A3S05 is Hoosiers answer to compete against the Kumho v710. (which were the national favorite in AutoX this year...its usually always Hosiers) But they too get chewed at the AutoX track with a car in stock alignment. Hoosiers are tempting but I don't want to go thru 2 $900 sets every 6 months at best. Plus they'd last 20 mins on the track.
If you want cheap cheap, go with some Falken Azenis (not a true R-compund). I abused mine at Mid-Ohio, many AutoX's and the street. They really did fine. Falken is coming out with a new replacment for the Azenis called the Rt-615. Suppsoedly they are to be awesome....but they aren't quite out yet. I got my Azenis over a year ago for about $450 total! (225/45/17)
FYI, I've been very happy with my all-weather tire. Pirelli P Zero Ner M+S in 234/45/17
However the Kumho Victoracers are probably the best bang for the buck. Good on the AutoX and good on the track. There are better but this is the perfect medium. I know Robbie has used them for last Fall's HPDE and AutoX'ing with great results. Acutally, I was very interested and impressed on how well they held together at Mid-Ohio.
Before the HPDE, I got my aligment done. This is especially important when running R-compounds. (I used to run BFG R-1's )
My Sti alignment specs are pretty simple:
as much negative camber in the front as possible...mine was between -1.0 -1.5. (you can get more if you push!)
Rear alignment is: 0
Don't bother with the other specs...keep 0 all around except for front.
My street tires have not been hurt due to my negative camber adjustments.
Unfortunately the Victoracers are still expensive at around $150-160 per tire.
Hope this helped a bit.

I had really good success with a set of BFG KDWs. I ran those on the Talon Great grip and held up very well. But I don't know that I would call them a race tire, just a great set of street tires. I think part of it depends on your style of driving and how you want your car to handle. Suspension and camber/Toe alignment will make a difference. Do you want to use these all the time or are these going to be used track only? Are they going to be drag only, autoX only, both?
Something to keep in mind for tire choice.

I did a lot of research in an attempt to find the same thing, and the BFG KDW's have become my next tire I think. If you look around at the ratings on TireRack for dry grip, steering response, etc., their ratings are just as high as most of the competition tires. I realize that these are likely customer ratings, but compare it to some of your favorite tires and check out the ratings. These are street tires, though, so they may not be what you want.

Good tire, but are close to the price for the r-compound VictoRacers. The KDW's (highly recommended by a buddy of mine who did nothing but lapping/instructing for a Mfg. every weekend) would be a good choice if you needed a street/summer and track tire in one setup.
I think swallace got an extra set of wheels and is looking for r-compounds for that exact reason. :)

I have never raced at an actual road course but when I read articles in rags I see that most of the cars in the 4 banger shootouts run Hoosier race slicks. They have everything from r25a to r75 compounds. Dont know about price though.

Hoosiers are like $250 per tire in my size. Kinda $$. Problem is that they last for one good track weekend at most. Some guys running stock alignment have had to switch/rotate theie hoosiers after 2 AutoX runs..yikes!
But if you really want to win, get hoosiers.
BTW, I was driving to work yesterday and saw a hoosiers freight truck on I-77. I was thinking of hi-jacking the truck and distributing the stickies to us needy tire happy burning drivers. just kidding of course!

I am in the process of grabbing two for the front......
Basically 3 types that bfg makes that are "drag friendly street/strip".
The new tire is the KDW, the best so far.....$$ but oh well...you only live once I guess.... 8)

The VictoRacer is not rated as high as even a goodyear. I dont understand:

Those ratings are from consumer surveys I think. If you read the reviews, you can see that the Goodyears reviews are mostly from the average user, but the Kumho's are from Autocrossers and Track day people. One comment on the Goodyears was the "awsome tread pattern."
Get the V700s.... they WON'T disappoint.
Im partial to Falkens, they wear ok, and grip excelent.

I got mine at full tread non heat treated. You can heat cycle them yourself. Mount them up and run them at highway speeds for about 20-30 min then take them off the car and let them set for at least a day or so before the next use. Getting them at full tread will make them half-way useable in the wet... at least till the tread wears away. My tread is almost done to nothing with one track day and about 4-5 autocrosses on them. Plus it's less expensive and they'll last slightly longer. If you were going to Topeka to compete nationally on a brand new set, you might want to have them shaved and heat treated.... otherwise I think it's a waste.
