View Full Version : My first fiberglass box cover, I guess you would call it

Hey, what do you think of my first shot at making my own box cover out of fiber glass, keep in mind, its only the first coat and its still wet even.

C_Note
03-21-2005, 06:21 AM
Hard to tell with it still wet, and laying on the form-factor. But take pictures of each stage for us, so we can follow your progress.

Looks good so far......hardest part I have seen that makes or breaks a good f/b is the sanding and prep before paint.....

Good luck man.....

How Do I post the pics so that "non-members" can see the pictures?

sweeteffx

Layer 2 fiberglass on the top, just a good coat of resin.

sweeteffx
03-22-2005, 02:12 PM
layering on the inside.

daveb91
03-23-2005, 08:43 AM
Did you use fleece? If so it might take a while to dry because the maerial will soak up alot of resin.

sweeteffx
03-23-2005, 08:17 PM
No, I used Spandex. It stretches the best, and doesnt really soak alot into it but works good. I'm gonna put like 4-5 layers of fiberglass on teh underneath, and finish the top side. I wont post any pics for a while till i do the detailing to the top, because there's not much to see when your just layering underneath.

I hope there is a port going in that box cause it seems awefully large for a sealed encolusure.

sweeteffx
03-26-2005, 06:02 PM
lol, nope, no port... There's a sealed box underneath 1 cubic ft. :-) Built to specs. as you can tell by the box parts jutting out from the front :-( didnt like the look of it, but it's growing on me. I rounded them out some more with the filler. So, its not all bad. just more curves. Its the strongest part on the box.

sweeteffx
03-28-2005, 04:05 PM
filler/primer stage.

sweeteffx
03-28-2005, 04:06 PM
there's sooooo much sanding/shaping left to do... wow. But, I'm gonna finish this this time.

sweeteffx
03-28-2005, 07:47 PM
It's hollow, it weigh's maybe 10-15 lbs... Just a guess, its not much to it. if you look at the pic of hte underneath side.

This thing takes the paint off soo fast its like you dont even need to spend 2-3 weeks on it like i have hand sanding the entire thing.

I've made a couple fiberglass boxes. I can help you out with some tips if you wannt know. Keeping the bubbles out in the first place is the biggest mistake I always made. They were a bitch to sand down. You should have laid mat down the sides too. Looks nice though. Want it painted with a gun for cheap? I might be able to help you out.

sweeteffx
04-14-2005, 09:50 AM
Yea, I neglected a couple bubbles  The over all is nice though. I'll know better on the next one. I'm gonna make one for the back of an ex-cab S-10 for 4 10's. I'm painting it from a can if you couldnt tell. ha ha. But it looks good so far. I think you'll be suprised with my spray can ability. :o

i have noticed that a few people have inquired about building these type of fiberglass boxes and what the prices are. Soloautomotive offers this service with prices based on how complicated the box gets. I have built several and the most any one has cost a customer is 250 dollars but it was very wild and alot of work. Here is an example of a simple box with alot of detail. This is for one 12 inch powerbase it has a custom cut flame design and red paint with red house of color metal flake. the price on this box is 175 without speaker.

That's nice. I like more contour than just a flat. Especially if you're going to go all out with fiberglass. But nice job. Just bein' critical. :D

how much does one of those weigh?

Don juan futon
05-10-2005, 04:51 PM
That one looks like it weighs a ton. Ha ha ha. Just kidding. But no, it looks heavier than most because it looks like it's basically all just mdf with a layer of resin on the outside? Could be wrong....

I built a HUGE one for 2 12's and it only weighs probably 20-25 lbs. (Without a sub)

sweeteffx
05-10-2005, 05:30 PM
yeh, looks like a nice box, but not much for fiberglass... It does have a nice finish though.

soloautomotive
05-12-2005, 04:23 PM
the box pictured was not made of fiberglass. i didn't have any pictures of the boxes that i have made of fiberglass. The flame box is all mdf wood carved and sanded to the shape you see. That flame box does not way any more than a normal one 12 box. I am doing a box with 2 15's in it right now with a fiberglass top, and will post the pics when i get it done. the 15 box i have will way a TON with the speakers in it but it is going in a full size truck so weight was not an issue. Keep in mind that a true fiberglass box does not have much wood in it. most of what everyone around here builds are just wooden boxes with a fiberglass top mainly for being painted to look nice.
