For real though, just as a topic of discussion, what would make a good sleeper?

I was thinking of something like a '96 Caprice Wagon with an LS1, or if you had the money, the new crate 572 (600hp, $14k), a 6-speed C5 box (what was that, the 4L-60?), and maybe a 75hp shot (or two... 8) ). I suppose it would be better to find something lighter, like maybe a regular Caprice or something, but I figured the wagon would give you more room for frame strengthening (then again, maybe a shorter wheelbase would be rigid enough to not need boxing).

What would you build? Rules are, it has to be real, it has to be domestic, it has to be street legal and run on pump gas, and should be affordable (under $35k for total project build). And to make it more fun, it should be something unexpected, so no Stangs/Camaros/Firebirds/SRTs/Vipers/etc or anything like that. No muscle cars. A sleeper. Lets go one step further and limit the model years to 1976 - 1996. It should be, though, something that you can find performance parts reasonably easy.

GMC Typhoon

Build the motor up some more, upgrade the brakes and suspension and paint it some ugly-ass brown color for sleeper effect.

Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon

Those little cars do pretty well in autox. They are easy to find for next to nothing.

they made those in a turbo model, you could also get a colt-gt which was turbo as well.

im going to think on this one for a little bit before i reply..
a cyclone/typhoon isnt really a sleeper unless you de-kit it and blast the windows in tint.. if the body styling doesnt give it away the interior will

Omni GLHS. And a 96 caprice wagon would be slow with a ls1 not much better than a Impala SS with LT1. Fast for a 4300lb car but not as quick as the new upcoming Impala with the new small block and FWD. Kind of sad. Sleeper = 86 fiero with the twin turbo northstar kit in it.

good point.. most ppl dont even know what a cyclone/typhoon is
i think im gona have to go with a Grand National or GNX
no need to hack up a GNX bein as how its just got a few dif things on it..
but why not
de badge it, take some stuf off like the louvers on the fenders
paint it the official mov area racecar color which seems ot be primer
an hit the street

i was thinking about the colt gt, one of the best sleepers ever, but not really a domestic, has turbo 4g61t mitsu engine. i would love to have one to mess around in, i had a friend that had one and i was shocked at how fast it was.

^^^^ Or a Turbo Dodge mini van yeah I agree with jay those cars are wicked tuned but even more wicked would be to tune the firebird pacecar that they put the GN or GNX engine in that would be cool.
