Has anyone been able to get the audio/call feature to work? I tried a little bit with a friend but all he heard was static.

Yes.

And it probably doesn't work with Trillian yet, does it?

No, but it is built on an "open" protocol, so it won't take long to intigrate it into Trillian. Keep in mind, this IS a beta version.

There is nowhere to sign up on the gmail site, and looking around it says it's still limited to who may use it (i.e. invite only).

You may have to do it by cell phone... but at least you don't need an invite.

It does work for trillian, but you need Trillian Pro... which a good pirate can find for a reasonable expense.

Here (http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html) is a list of the other IM clients that can use Google Talk, along with OS compatability.

You need to create the account as a Jabber account... I haven't tried it with my Adium IM client, but I hear it's still a little iffy.

It's a beta. ...but it could use a few more features. On the other hand... I love Google for their simplistic style. I hope they never "skin it".

That's Google's trick up the sleeve. They leave everything in "beta", even years after it's been released to the public, so they can use it as their fallback.
