Hmm... definitely some interesting games this weekend, and a turn of events that I was not expecting.
First and foremost, congratulations JoPa. These two teams sure seemed perfectly matched against each other, and Penn St was fortunate enough to get an extra TD in on us. OSU offense sucks. I can't imagine what anyone sees in Troy Smith and he sure isn't any better than Zwick, who gets a lot of flack from the public. Ginn wasn't looking that great, either.
All the upsets this weekend came from the 10s, Big & Pac (hmm, is there a Biggie & Pac theory there?):
Northwestern squeezed Wisconsin out by 3 in an amazingly high scoring game (Big 10, as you know, is all about the D. Don't see these offensive games that often). The Badgers fall from 14 to 23, and the Wildcats remain unranked.
Penn St over Ohio St, as I've already commented on. JoPa and crew jump from 16 to 8 breaking the top 10 for the first time in years, and the Buckeyes fall from 6 to 15. Ouch... I have to say, I'm upset that we should and could have beaten both Penn St and Texas offensively but failed to do so, but I'm not mad. We have 2 losses against 2 very good teams, and I can accept that. It could be worse, they could be against Pac 10 teams... ;)
After losing to UCLA, California falls from 10 to 18; the Bruins leap from 20 to 12.
I think Oregon surprised everyone with a win over Az St, especially by 2 TD. The ugliest uniforms in the NCAA move up 5 spots to 20, while the Sun Devils are dropped from the top 25.
It wasn't an upset but I wanted to say that I was expecting the Red River Shootout to be a lot closer. Texas just goes to show how impressive they are this year as they dominated Oklahoma from start to finish. I even heard Lou Holtz agree with me that Texas should be #1.
Week 7
1 USC - Hopefully for the last week, the Trojans remain at the top of the list. This week they travel to South Bend for what will most likely be the toughest game of their season. Go Irish!
2 Texas - The Longhorns have an easy home game this weekend before jumping into another rivalry game. Hopefully they'll be filling the vacancy in the #1 spot by this time next week.
3 Virginia Tech - Off this weekend, so they'll most likely remain right behind Texas at #3 or 2; with the numbers they've been putting up, I don't think FSU would leapfrog them.
4 Florida St - They've got a road game in Virginia, but the Cavaliers appear pretty harmless.
5 Georgia - These aren't the Bulldogs from last season, but they're dominating the SEC along with #6 Alabama. Fortunately for the two of them, they don't face this year. This week is a trip to Vanderbilt who is 2-1 in conference play after a loss to LSU this weekend, which should be a guaranteed victory.
The remaining 20 are:
6 Alabama (from 7)
7 Miami (from 9)
8 Penn St (from 16)
9 Notre Dame (from 12)
10 LSU (from 11)
11 Florida (from 13)
12 UCLA (from 20)
13 Texas Tech (from 15)
14 BC (from 18)
15 Ohio St (from 6)
16 Michigan St (from 19)
17 Tennessee (from 8)
18 California (from 10)
19 Louisville (from 23)
20 Oregon (from 25)
21 Auburn (from 22)
22 Minnesota (from 27)
23 Wisconsin (from 14)
24 Colorado (from 30)
25 TCU (from 31)
Must see games for week 7:
Penn St at Michigan - We'll see if the JoPa crew continue to dominate the Big 10, or if the OSU defeat was a lucky one.
SUC at Notre Dame - This is the game I've been waiting to see, and probably the 2nd most anticipated game among NCAA fans after Texas at the Shoe.
Florida at LSU - LSU lost to Tenn, and Tenn lost to Florida. Can we make a complete revolution with the Tigers knocking the Gators out of contention? They're close enough in rankings (10 & 11) that the loser may have just enough room to hang on to the top 25.
Michigan St at Ohio St - They lost to Michigan, but the Spartans are a tough team this year. These two are also neck & neck in rankings (15 & 16), which may be too low to hold a ranking after a loss.
Louiville at WV - The Mountaineers lead the Big East in conference games, and this will be a great match. A win at home will put the 'Eers back on the map as they start looking at a bowl game.
Wisconsin at Minnesota - With the low rankings (22 & 23), a loss for either team will probably diminish their appearance in the rankings for some time. Both teams have a lot of potential but are doomed to Big 10 competition.
