View Full Version : Best Power Plant & Why?

What are some pro's/con's of each and in your opinion which is the best.

Don't pick one, b/c it's cool/trendy/etc, choose based on your experience/knowledge and give real world answers.

Curious what everyone thinks.

This isn't a discussion on why a 57 Hemi is hands down the best motor every produced, but instead a generalized idea of the best automotive design past/present.

In my opinion, the 383 stroker is the best engine because its a very good bang for the buck powerplant. You can get a very high amount of torque when an engine is stroked as well as bored. My dad has one in his Nova, its also bored .040 over which makes it about a 390 I think. This engine has gobs of low end torque and it also has a very strong mid range hit in horsepower. We don't know its exact output yet, but Dave at Watson Ruppel told us that its probably making about 480-500 hp, he didn't know about a torque number but I'm sure its a good bit more. jeez, I typed way too much!

diesel is a great design, good for torque, good for soooo many miles, and usually fairly reasonable to rebuild if it does blow. turbo diesel's have a lot of potential as far as tuning as well.not saying its my favorite, i love diesel trucks, but it just isnt practical for me.

Your poll doesn't really work well, Adam. Most, if not all, rotary and boxer engines are gasoline. But... I see what your getting at. I think it would be better off as 2 polls. One for fuel and the other for configuration. There are boxer 6 cylinders BTW(not sure about more than 6). and... How about the new W design.... or V designs.

Rotarys are extremely un-effecient, hard on gas, extremely emissions un-friendly, but capable of making quite a bit of horsepower..

2 strokes are very emissions un-friendly but damn.. you just cant beat a 250r :D

I cant say I know much about the porsche engine..

I think as far as trucks ect. go Deisel is the way to go. Incredible capabilities w/them.. Even in stock form the torque is so impressive. If I was to buy a new truck it would def be a Deisel. Powerstroke Deisel to be exact.. screw you Dodge rattletrap lovers :roll:

As for the off topic reason of why these heads or block ect. is better than yada yada..
Chevy's 302, perferably the large journal model found in late 68's an 69's
Short stroke, 4 inch bore, rips like a 2 stroke an can rev as high as hell if built properly
Drop the compression on that bitch an boost the hell out of it..

Boxer 4s cylinder engines are good because:
the crank shafts are short
the vibrations put on the crank are less than an inline
the center of gravity is kept low

They are bad because:
the crankshafts are short(not as beefy)
they suck to work on

I hear it's a lil' difficult to change the spark plugs in a WRX.

i get it now.....interesting design but i could see where there is alot of damage potential if something were to break

You've also got 2 heads and twice the cam shafts and a huge timing chain/belt and a split block(correct?) and wierd intake/exhaust manifolds. Like I said, I like them as long as they don't need "worked on".
