Developed a huge oil leak in my Supra. Thought it was the rear main seal... took pictures of the disassembly of the entire process and re-assembly. Turns out I don't think it's the rear main seal rather the front timing belt o-rings and seals leaking but it needed it.

Found a broken transmission mount, and a headless clutch plate bolt (missing the head).

I will post an entire write up later g2g 4 now.

hey 5t0p p1c|<1|\|9 on m3...

No seriously I was making that post from work, and with my boss in the other room, me suddenly clacking out 80+ wpm on the keyboard is a rather noticable racket.

Anyways, Yeah I replaced the rear main seal anyways, once I got under it it didn't appear that it was the rear main seal that was leaking. Now I'm looking towards the front of the engine... possibly the front timing cover, and cam tower seals. If I have to I'll systematically install new oil gaskets all the way around the engine untill I get to the head gasket. However it seems to be leaking from the right hand side of the engine.

This time I'm going to take the car to the car wash, jack it up and power spray the entire underside of the car. Tranny shifts smoother now on a side note, I think it might have been a bit low on fluid after 180,000 miles (I've not thought to check it in the 1.5 years I've owned the car).

This weekend I replace the transmission mount, rear differential fluid (with RedLine stuff) and possibly the timing cover seals & gaskets... Methinks the timing seals etc will be MUCH easier than the PITA rear main seal.

I'll have to admit I've been spending a WHOLE lotta time over @ the 85 Supra Online TSRM (Toyota Service Repair Manual) (http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM_MKII/)

Any thoughts from anyone on where the oil might be coming from? Any general suggestions on locating troubleshooting oil leaks? I've got a boatload of pictures so I can post those up once I get them off the camera. At least it was only 3 days labor, 2 w/o my car operational, and a 18 dollar seal. Hopefully the rest are as cheap. Nothing beats free labor, aside from getting so sore afterwards

Last night I powerwashed the entire underside of the engine and drove it the 7 miles to my parents house where I was able to put her up on jack stands and get back under it.

I performed a close visual inspection of the front of the oil pan, and both sides of the block, and also took several dozen pictures. The nice thing about my digital camera it's smaller than my head and can get to go places I can't see, even w/ a mirror.

After my inspection of the oil pan and both sides of the block below the head, I don't think the oil pan or the head gasket are the culprits.

There are only two places that I think the leaks are coming from, and I'm leaning towards the first. When I looked @ the Xmission bell housing on the passenger side, there was a visible oil drip trail running from as far up as I could see all the way down to the bottom of the Xmission where it would drip off & onto the ground. In addition the under side of the Water Bypass piping that's located right behind the Head/Block on the right hand side had oil visibly remaining on it. I believe that the leak is most likely the right Cam Tower gasket (that goes between the head and the cam tower). I'm going to replace them (both L&R) but only after I get enough money and have the ENTIRE weekend off. I also am going to replace the Cam Tower Cover gaskets at the same time.

The only other place that I can visibly see a slight amount of oil persperation/wetness is directly above and to the right of the water pump(towards center portion of the engine). However I think this is just normal oil seepage for it's mileage and use/abuse (180,000 & I auto-X it every month I can).

The the front upper-right-hand side of the block does appear to be slightly moist with oil as well, but this is in the exact same area as the Power Steering pump and could be from this as well. Especially since the area in question is merely inches from the power steering reservoir and slightly below it.

Although this leak is proving troublesome I'm finding out that I only lacked the confidence, not the skill to perform in depth repairs to my beloved Supra. So far because of this one leak I've found & fixed the following (proactively):

Replaced Rear Main Seal
Replaced a broken Clutch Housing Mounting bolt (1 of 6 that holds the clutch to the flywheel)
Replaced Broken Transmission Mount
Tightened Shifter Pivot Mounting Plate bolts that the service shop didn't properly tighten (sloppy shift pattern gone)
Replaced Heater Core to Water Bypass Piping 5/8" Hose
Replaced the Heater Core hose that goes between Head & Vacuum Controlled Valve

I've also been able to replace the rear differential fluid, and had the opportunity to visually inspect the underside of my car, including the front and rear sway bar bushings.

Oh yeah the weird thing.... You read for this??

I checked the oil level in the Supra Friday night before driving from Hackney (above Beverly) to Emerson Bowling Lanes. (Added oil to make it exactly full). It leaked @ Emerson Lanes, it Leaked @ the Radio Station the next day, and it leaked once I got it home.

I checked the oil level inthe Supra Saturday night before driving back home to Marietta from Hackney... Same *maybe *SLIGHTLY* lower oil level.

It seems as if its leaking oil from some magicaly mystery location. Because the engine oil's not going down any more than normally.

Now I know I have a slightly leaking Master Clutch Cylinder, that's no problem and I fill it / check it weekly. The power steering is closed loop, or as in not-leaking at all.. Everytime I check it the system is @ correct levels. Any thoughts?

I know the Xmission is full and doesn't appear to be leaking... My oil is still fine (not milky) engine still performs like a banshee... but oil is leeeeekiiing.

*shrugs* I donno I'm gonna drive it and check it every day morning & night
