My mom's '93 Miata has a bad hesitation to it, and we're stumped right now as to what the problem might be and how to fix it. So far we've tried changing the fuel filter, advancing the timing, and the spark plugs and wires are good. Does anybody know how to fix this, or know somebody that can?

is it only at low rpms? dose it do it only when its cold or always?

She says it does it no matter what the temperature is, and it occurs when she gives it gas at low rpms.

well usually its the plugs or wires on those things but if you have already replaced them then maybe its your coil. Have you tried getting a code off of it yet?
Sorry couldn't be much help. If it was a Honda i could just go on Honda IN and look it up. Ill see if i can get a hold of the Mazda tech at Simmons and see what he says if no one else answers your question.

Dirty fuel inj, are you sure its in time? Liam and Kurt no more about the mazda 1.6-1.8l than I do. Does it have a coil pack or a single coil. Can you do a resistance check on the coil. You say the spark plugs and wires are good, are they new or newer, do they have the right gap?

Oh and then there is the greatest of all to troubleshoot a vacuum leak.

might want to try running some fuel system cleaner through, cheap, easy, and occasionally solves the problem, how many miles are on it, has it had the timing belt replaced, etc.?

The solution is to simply sell your Mom’s Miata to me for cheap! ;)
My 91 (w/ 92 driveline) feels kind of boggy under 1000 rpm…even more so when it is cold. Once it’s warmed up its not particularly noticeable. I replaced the wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, and engine in the process of fighting this bogginess. (Well, I didn’t actually replace the engine due to the bogginess…it was replaced because the first one overheated.)
I did however feel the bogginess was the same on both engines.
Is the hesitation a newly developed issue? How bad does it affect the drivability of the car?

We have not tried that yet.

We were actually thinking dirty fuel injector, and it's supposedly in time. I believe it has a single coil, but I'm not sure. I'm guessing the gap is right, and yeah they're new.

I'll try to get her to try that. I think it did have the timing belt replaced, and that's when the problem started to become noticeable. She said it would be doing it before she had the belt replaced, but it got much worse afterwards. It has 127,8xx miles on it right now.

Screw that, she's giving it to me when she buys a Mini S after we hit the lottery!

Does it still rev when it hesitates? Could just be the clutch going out.

Well, she just got something done to the clutch as well, I forget what all was wrong with that. We took it into Schultz or something like that today in Vienna because she was really having trouble getting to work, and she couldn't wait any longer for it to be fixed.

She got it back today, and we told them it might be the fuel system and they ran the cleaner through......and nothing else, haha. They did EXACTLY what we asked them to do, and nothing more, hahaha. They told us the #2 spark plug was cracked or something, so we're gonna replace them this weekend. I also found out that we put new ones in LAST summer, so that's probably just the problem. Thanks for all the help so far.
