Well apparently I have something going on in my browser to where I'll just be surfing along just fine and then some of the page or the entire page will not even load. It's as if I didn't have a connection in the first place. BUT I DO! I've tried ad aware and spybot to help get rid of this problem but that hasn't worked. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure it's a charter problem. Mine is doing the same thing and I know of someone else that has the same problem

Ah I see. Doesn't surprise me. Charter is a joke.
Same thing happens to me, I have to click on links a few times sometimes to go to them. Half the time Google doesnt even load.

Does it say that it can't find the site or can't resolve the address? If so, I can help. Let me know and I'll tell the secret.

I'll try to write this up. Forgive me if I screw it up.
Start -> run -> type "cmd" -> hit enter... a command window will open
type "ipconfig /all" -> hit enter
write down all of your DNS entries (this is very important)
close the command window
My Computer -> My Network Places -> View network connections
right click on your internet connection(most likely labled "Local Area Connection 1") -> properties
Select Internet Protocal(TCP/IP) and click Properties
It should be set to "obtain DNS information automatically" -> change it to "Use the following DNS information"
Hit the advanced button -> click the DNS tab
Add your previously written down DNS addresses
Add an additional address of 4.2.2.4
Accept all changes
Report back here if it worked or not
Your welcome!

If Robbie's fix doesn't seem to help, post your ongoing problem with your setup.. Cable modem / dsl, router / make and model, how many machines on the connection, what OS they are running.

I keep attempting this but everytime I type ipconfig /all the little msdos command prompt window will pop up and then instantly disappear.

Sounds like you are typing ipconfig into the Run window itself, not opening the dos command prompt first...
When you click start > Run, type CMD or Command, then hit OK and the MS-DOS command window should open up and stay open.
Then type ipconfig /all and hit enter, and it should stay open so that you can see the results.
Type 'exit' and hit enter to close the window.
Let us know how it goes!

Thank you! That *hopefully* just fixed one of my customer's problems I've been fighting with for 2 weeks now. Charter's DNS servers suck.

I first experienced this problem when I moved to Teays Valley. The only problem that I had was with evolutionm.net which is seem to visit hourly.
I called charter and got the normal "do a reboot" tech guy on the phone. That guy probably didn't know what DOS was/is. Needless to say, he didn't solve my problem. I fixed it myself using the public DNS 4.2.2.4. I called Charter to tell them that the problem was on their end. I somehow got someone on the phone that knew what a DNS was. He understood the problem and how I fixed it, but he said that there wasn't anything that he could do to fix it at the source of the problem, Charter's DNSs. :dunno:

I actually run into that problem quite frequntly. I have a different Charter DNS number that I usually use, but I can never remember it. I think I'll be using 4.2.2.4 from now on :)
This customer has been losing internet completely, but I didn't realize it was possibly a DNS problem until today. If that doesn't fix it for good, the only things left I havn't tried is to replace their router and/or modem.

Oh shit! Ha ha ha. I missed the "CMD" command. That'd probably make a bit of a difference.
BTW, thank you for responding to my concerns with Charter tim.

If a dns proplem took you 2 weeks to diagnose, you need to find a new job.

Phone call, customer has no internet...Go onsite, internet is working. A week later, same problem. Go back onsite, internet is working. Can't fix what ain't broke! The next week I finally get to work on it while the net is down and find out it's a DNS problem after a few minutes.

This will only work on Windows 2000 / XP Home / XP Pro
Start -> run -> type "cmd" -> hit enter... a command window will open
type "cmd /k ipconfig /all" -> hit enter
write down all of your DNS entries (this is very important)
close the command window
My Computer -> My Network Places -> View network connections
right click on your internet connection(most likely labled "Local Area Connection 1") -> properties

I added the CMD /K
It will open the command prompt window, and pause it or keep it up then it executes the ipconfig command
Additionally if you're wanting to test if you can see the internet try pasting these two following commands.
cmd /k ping http://www.yahoo.com /t
cmd /k ping http://www.charter.net /t
The /t command at the end will keep on pinging yahoo / charter non stop. If you're having connection issues you may see that some of the pings will drop or time out or fail etc.
Press & hold CONTROL & then press C. This will stop it from pinging.
The nice thing about this is that if you let it run for lets say 5 minutes you get a better feel for how your connection really is doing. It will also display stats after you're done. Looks like this:
Ping statistics for 209.73.186.238:
Packets: Sent = 2, Received = 2, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 28ms, Maximum = 32ms, Average = 30ms
