I've never heard of this before, but it sounds fun and thought I'd share.

A segment in the most recent TravelCommons podcast centered around the fact that he wanted a new car and had decided on a Saab 9-3 Convertible. The salesman described a European Delivery Program option where you receive a stipend of $2,000 to pickup your new car at the factory, drive it around Sweden for a week or two and drop it off at a shipping waypoint for it to make it's way to the U.S. so you can bring it home.

Here's how the Saab website describes it:
With our special European Delivery program, you can pick up your new car in its hometown of Trollhättan, Sweden, or your choice of fifteen other beautiful European cities. You'll enjoy attractive pricing, along with the vacation of a lifetime. We'll even give you a $2,000 stipend to defray your travel expenses.

I don't particularly care for the idea of the car then being crated up and shipped to America due to possible shipping damage and picking it up at the waypoint, but maybe they have a local delivery program for that as well.

There has to be a tax break or something on this to make it worth their while... otherwise, I'd think Saab would lose a ton of revenue on this program.

I don't know if any other companies do this, but I thought it'd be kinda neat to get to drive your brand new Mini Cooper S around Great Britain or your new STi around Japan. Or how about picking up your new M3 at the factory and break it in, then knock down a few laps at Nurburgring and a high speed commute down the Autobahn.

Not a Saab fan but cool none the less..
I know for a pretty insane ammount of money you can go to Kentucky and watch your corvette being built then take it home.

Yea, pretty cool deal with SAAB. (arch rivals Volvo does it too)

I had a friend get his new t50 Volvo that way.
However you are not necessarily going to get a deal on the car if you want this option
