I was looking in to putting a turbo in my car and I was just wondering what everyone thought about it? Good idea? Bad idea?

doooo it. have you done some research on the idea? Make sure you don't half ass anything (learned that the hard way). Heres a good place to start :-) http://www.club3g.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=61. Theres nothing like boooooooooossst. Is a supercharger out of the idea? i was just thinking the super might be more reliable.

I never really thought about a supercharger but if it is probably more reliable I would really consider.

I owned a 2000 Eclipse GT from 00' to 03'. I've been out of the scene for a while, so I don't know how far the aftermarket has come since then. It sucked back in 03'. The best thing going was the RIPP centrifigal supercharger kit. My Eclipse never saw boost. I traded up for an Evo. I haven't looked back.
Personally, I think a turbo is a bad idea. Its a V6 so you're either going to use one bank, combine two banks or go the twin route concerning exhaust manifolds. You also need to consider lowering the compression ratio and you have 6 cylinders to do that on instead of 4; it'll cost more.
I'd do one of three things if your looking to boost your car... both require you to trade your Eclipse:
1. Get a 4-cylinder Eclipse and pop a snail on it.
2. Get a car thats turbocharged from the factory.
3. Get a honda and throw a snail on it.
#3 is the obvious decision

The funny thing is...is that I really just got this car like 2months ago...I had a 98 eclipse gs, so I am not looking to really trade it, it runs really good it actually has some things done to it catback, injen cold air, rims and tires...I was wanting to lower it and get a front lip for it and supercharge it up....but I want to know what it will $?

The funny thing is, is that I just really got this car like 2months ago...I'm really not looking to sell it and get another unless the price is right...I got rid of my 98 eclipse gs...but as far as my new eclipse goes it runs great has some stuff done to it like catback, injen cold-air, rims and tires...I am looking to lower it put a front lip on it and supercharge...I was looking to see how much it would cost to supercharge it and it be done right.?.?

My initial idea was to get a gst or a gsx but I drove up to martinsburg to get a tsi awd from this guy and hes like "it drives awesome and nothing is wrong with it" so...I took his word and drove 4hrs to get it and got there and it was a piece of crap! needless to say I took it out for a spin and had fun with it...me and my buddy m50z (josh), it freaking was so fast but none of the windows would role down nor the locks would work and everytime I shifted the trans would jump, so took it back to him and popped the hood and it was wrecked before he painted a red front bumper and the front finders..I asked him if it was wrecked and he said no...and I said how do you explain the bumper and fenders....He didn't say anything and I was like thanks for lying and me driving 4hrs for this piece of shit....so I just stop trying and found this car.
put a full exhaust on it w/out cats
buy a zex kit
This should be your first investment. (see pic)
Changing the catback helps but you can only move as much air as your manifolds will allow. If you have a straw that's 1" in diamater it's going to be alot easier to blow through than if it was 1/2" on one end and 1" on the other end. Think of it as bottle necking. The faster you can get air out the faster you can get more in.

I'll field this one.. then throw it on over to Dave to throw it on home.
We had talked about these some time back in a thread that I do not remember which of.
Though I admire your enthusiasm in making your car faster these do not work.
There is/was one company out there that was making electric motors that were capable of producing a constant ammount of boost (only around 1.8psi.) but it took ALOT of wattage to run the small motor.
These electric setups claim to move an x-ammount of cfm's which is true they do. However your motor sucks in an x-ammount of cfm's. On some test's it was proven that certain motors actually sucked more air in and quicker than what one of these things could keep up with.
So bottom line is no, do not order one of these.

That's just two turbo chargers tho.. Hell I have that in my garage.
You could fab you a tt kit im sure, or a single for that matter, but I think I would go w/supercharger.
You are going to find that putting together a turbo kit for it is an expensive process in the long run as well as a "nickel and dime" ordeal as you will constantly be buying a replacement this or that.

Wasnt it Knight Engineering or something? They took a roots blower powered it with what looked like a starter motor and hooked it up to a battery bank. This actually produced some psi around 5-6. But the batteries only lasted under 20 sec or so. Also I believe the batteries weighed a butt load. The other electric "sc" are just crappy marine style fans that totally suck and are more of a restriction than help.

Well it matters how far you go with it but for a low boost setup you cont have to lower the compression.

True. However, properly boosting that V6 would probably cost more than boosting a I4, correct? If I spend a heck of a lot of money, I would expect a heck of a lot of power.
You could actually twin turbocharge and supercharge on top of it. The question is.... is it worth it?
Is the ECU in the 3G Eclipse GT programable? Do the aftermarket boosting kits use piggybacks?
The stock ecu in a 3g will work with an Apexi SAFC-II.
You have to upgrade to 330cc injectors or better, a FPR, and a fuel pump.
The claimed HP numbers is 100HP gain running 5psi while 9psi is the safe limit and should only be ran with a good professional tune.
That's on a single turbo setup using a y-pipe connecting both banks before entering the turbo. I guess you could go twin turbo but really I dont see the need being how you dont really need it. With the compression of the factory v6 as well as the 6 cylinders moving exhaust out I think the single turbo should spool extremely quick.
Personally, I say supercharge it. Less mess, headache, and shit to go wrong.
Unless it came from the factory w/turbocharger it's gona break .. ALOT
I rarely see anything w/aftermarket turbo setup that doesnt give you headaches from time to time.

Well, I really want to make faster and I think I might go with the supercharger but I want to find one cheaper than what I have seen which is like 4grand, and that is too much for me to spend since next year I am going to college...and I really would need help with installment and all the parts I would need to do it and if I find one cheap enough I would be willing to pay for help.

Youre going to have 4g in a single turbo kit as well.
Buy headers, 86' the cat, buy some cams, and slap a bottle on it.
Im tellin ya nitrous does wonders. Think of it as an instant 100hp kick in your ass when you turn it on.

Just wait until you're done with college. That's what I'm being forced to do as far as money goes. You want to have a reliable car for college, and turboing a DSM is just asking for it.

I think it's the same 6G72 block. However, it isn't a bolt on. Take up cross-stitching or knitting as a hobby. I guarantee it'll be more fun than going forced induction on that car. Put it on the bottle like Jay suggested and be done with it.
