A few months ago, my check engine light came on. I was driving back to Morgantown from Sistersville. After a few stops, I noticed that the car felt like it wasn't engaging first gear from a stand still. The car is automatic, but it felt like it was a standard with the clutch barely engaged (revs fast and high, but barely moves). It then slams through a gear, then engages first and throws me into second. If I barely hold in on the gas, I can avoid the hard shift for the most part. This only happens in D4. I can put it in D2 and avoid it completely. It also fails to shift into fourth when this is happening.

The second part of the problem is that my speedometer rarely works as well. It intermittently works at times, showing me that it is not a fault in the VSS. My car tends to report speed where the ground is flat and the area has less hills. I figured the transmission fluid could be low and now turning the small gear, but the level is fine. The odd thing is that most of these problems surfaced around the same time I changed the fluid.

Everything I have read online is pretty vague. I'm not finding any concrete answers to the problem. Some guy on about.com has a bulletin that says that the problem is from a linear solenoid that goes bad or it could be a bad ground. To change the linear solenoid, you have to flush the car with genuine Honda ATF fluid several times, then change the solenoid and re-fill w/Honda fluid.

Anyone have any knowledge of this problem? Its a 98 Civic LX with almost 100k on it. Anyone who knows anything or someone to talk to, that would be great. I'd like to get this fixed!

Shouldn't be too hard to find one in the salvage yard.

Apparently Honda had a huge thing with bad transmissions (I keep reading this NOW). Ugh.

I can find transmissions from $200-500. Problem is finding a civic that wasn't riced out.

honda having bad transmissions?

what about ford during the 90's
about every taurus or thunderbird has a bad transmission. Im just glad I have a new one thats been built up, and new, lol.

but it shouldnt be too hard to find, or you can do a 5 speed swap

5 speed swap would solve your issue, just depends on how much work/time/extra money you want to throw into it.

I always wanted a 5spd. They apparently don't have the problems either. The issue is that my dad doesn't want me to have one. I can drive one, just not too terribly well. When I got the car, it was still summer and I could have learned how to drive it in town great (I live in Morgantown). He said I'd end up drifting into someone with all of the hills. He also said that if I got one, he'd drop me from the insurance.

But believe me, I'd rather have one.
