Ok so up until last week everything I have read told me to run any scca solo event I needed a SCCA membership for the 08 season. On SWVR I asked the question and they told me I didnt need the membership I would just pay they slightly higher entrance fee as usual. I am confused on other sites people are talking about thier local regions and having to pay for the membership. ?????? Sean? Davis? Kurt? Tim? Gtfour???

I don't have a license, however I pay a few dollars more than the people with SCCA membership. There's a discount for having a membership. Though it's not enough for me to warrant a membership since I'm always gone and can't make events.

I'm just as confused as you, Dave. I generally do not carry an SCCA membership, we just paid the higher entrance fees. Unfortunately with an even higher rate last season, as well as the potential for this new SCCA policy, we've had to rethink that.

If true this is BullSH!t. :bsflag:
Starting on Jan 1st, 2008, ALL regional competitors (Solo, Rally, Club Racing, etc) MUST be SCCA members. Temporary memberships will be sold at each event for $15.
All non-SCCA members will be required to check in and become members BEFORE going to registration (Even points card holders who are not SCCA members must join. The regional points card is NOT a membership.)
The temporary memberships will be valid for the event weekend. If you later decide that a full membership would be a good idea, the $15 membership dues will apply as a discount on the $75 price.
If you plan to run several events next year, you might as well have a full SCCA membership.
Temporary and full membership forms will be available at ALL regional solo events.
In 2007, we were rquired to put our SCCA membership numbers on the waiver, when signing in at the gate. SCCA #'s will be required on all paperwork - registration cards, etc. If you are a SCCA member already, please be sure to update your online profile. That way, if you forget your number, we will have a list at registration.
The Details:
[Includes region dues. You can join by phone if you wish to join a different region. Region dues range from $0 to $25. Cal Club (our region) dues are $25]

I call bullshit too. Why should I have to pay $15 buck temporary membership PLUS the event fee. I'm not going to benefit from having a full membership since I'm gone all the time, so now I have to pay an extra $15 bucks on top of the event fee. This is a conspiracy to require people to be members and make more money & membership numbers. I'd be a member if it would do me any good.
F*ck this. Makes me want to not even bother; esp. since the CHEAP mods put me in SM or STS... I mean yeah I can afford new rims and $400 in tires that I can only use at the track to make me competitive in my class as opposed to the $100 sway bar I can use all the time and the $10 dollar strut tower bar, and the $25 buck intake. Yeah wtf ever.
I know some of you will say you have to pay to play, well it just got more expensive and I don't know if its worth it anymore. $40 bucks to play, plus fun runs, food, gas, and a whole days time... I'd rather just go back-roading and raising hell.

I'm in agreement. At the costs that the events have gotten to I'm afraid my interest in attending has wained severely.
When you couple the costs of 2 people (at $45 a piece when nonmembers) with the cost of fuel (~$50 a tank at $3.25/gal) food at ~$15 and misc ~$20 you come to around $175 for one day. Thats almost $15 a minute assuming 6 minutes driving time per person. Add the driving time to and from Charleston, the earlier start time and the fact that the events are on Sunday and my interest becomes seriously reduced.
It wouldn't take many events to come up to the cost of a track day, and I think that would be more entertaining and a bigger bang for the bucks.
That being said I'm still more then willing to help at the local event if we have one and any airport events are still sufficiently interesting to me so long as they don't end up being like the Yeager event last year (good event really, but I didn't care for the course and it was extremely hot.)

With Kurt on this one, loved the airports event would pay the money for them. Yeager killed as far as the heat and length of time the run groups were. I think Kurt and I were both glad the clutch started slipping didnt take much convincing for Jarrod either!

So I read in the 2008 rules you wont need a membership. But I kept seeing this membershio thing everywhere I guess thats good then.

This.
I let my SCCA membership lapse when a basic membership w/o competition license (and I was no longer actively running) jumped to ~$75/yr. SportsCar's not that good of a read.
