Parading the R8 V12 TDI concept car at the 2008 Detroit International Auto Show, Audi proves it's serious about the future of diesel-powered vehicles.

The R8 V12 TDI, which generates 500 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, is the first 12-cylinder diesel engine in a high-performance, roadgoing sports car. Audi says that the V12 TDI, which is closely related to the 5.5-liter, 650-hp powerplant in the two-time Le Mans-winning R10, should rocket the R8 concept from 0 to 60 mph in just over four seconds. Peak torque comes at only 1750 rpm with the help of two turbochargers (located on the outside of the engine's V) and a pair of intercoolers.

Perhaps most important, the V12's engineers made full use of clean diesel technology, as Audi claims the R8 V12 TDI concept already fulfills the Euro 6 emissions standard likely to take effect in 2014.

The concept R8 also receives exterior enhancements that differentiate it from the regular R8, including a continuous aluminum spoiler lip, all-LED headlights, a reshaped exhaust, and new bumpers.

Inside the Audi, drivers find an engine start/stop button on the steering wheel, more aluminum and carbon fiber elements than in the production R8, and unique instrument lighting that changes from white to red when the V12 TDI is in Race mode.

I don't get it. Is the R8 itself suppoed to be a concept or just the TDI V12? Because I'm 110% sure I was sitting across from one of these at a stop light in Columbia on Friday. He was in the left turn lane and got the arrow so I had a good look at it. The panels behind the doors weren't body-matched but they were definitely lighter in color (lighter than the rest of the car, actually).

Nah its not in production. Maybe you saw a Bugatti. LOL that would also be nice.

I promise you, it was an Audi. I saw the rings and everything. I intentionally checked because I remembered seeing pictures of this before and thought it was just a concept. But it was there, in living color.

I just went to the Audi site and they said the R8 was put on the market in Nov '07

Yeah it was one of the gasoline powered R8's; regardless they're beautiful to look at!! And I agree with Dave I really like the styling as well,

Yeah, the standard R8 production car is available here in the states.

Just the the V12 TDI is a concept, and quite likely designed to squelch the nanny-state car laws that are spreading like wildfire in Europe. Ferrari and Koeniggsegg have developed ethanol and other biofuel powered prototypes to help skirt the anti-gasoline legislation as well

Luckily biofuels can produce up to 10% more power than Gasoline if tuned properly. Perhaps this ethanol thing isn't such a bad idea after all... :driving:

Ethanol is very bad we dont have enough Corn crop to convert to that. I prefer atomic.

While the essentially unlimited power potential sounds great, I don't like the idea of driving around in an isolation suit all day.

Matter anti matter?????? LOL

TDi is going to get more and more popular here in the next couple years. Id like to see more TDi performance cars.
