Robbie and I had a great time at the HPDE (high performance driving education) at the legendary Mid-Ohio raceway. This school is put on by the BMW CCA organization and is organized very well while providing top-notch driving instructors at high speeds.

Basically, you have classroom sessions followed by track sessions and some observations of other drivers and ride-alongs. An instructor is with you in the car and will give input on the racing line, car physics, braking techniques and many other important factors.

This was my second HPDE with the BMW CCA club. I've done other such events in Sweden and in Calif but this one has much more focus on racing lines and vehicle dynamics.

Mid-Ohio is a top 5 track in the USA and a top 8 track in the world. Considered a very technical track, it places an emphasis on proper lines and braking techniques as well as some bravery over certain blind crests at 80+. Speeds range from (in an EVO, STi, or M3) 40mph around the carosel, to 130mph at the end of the back straight. Definately a course to see and run sometime in your life if you are into road racing.

Robbie did very well and I know was at the top of the D begining class. ( I'll let him give the 1st person review :D ) The EVO looked great on track and he did a great job of putting it in the right places.

The STi did well all weekend. Last year I remembered what a beating the brakes take on this course and blew it this year by not changing out my pads before the event. I ran into some interesting brake feedback going into turn 7 at 130mph. After that I eased up on my brakes on the long straight and decided to focus more on the rest of the course. Brakes did fine the rest of the weekend (getting new pads and fluids this week I promised myself) and the power and torque of the STi was wonderful to take advantage of. I was able to keep the car in 4th gear thru much of the track and just use 5th and 6th on the straight. It was alot of fun catching up to and passing M3's :P

It is rather difficult for me to describe what driving on the track is like in a steet car. I have experience driving a race Mini Cooper, Peugeot 305, 406 and 606's, Ferrari 355 Pace car, but the STi is the first daily-driven car that I have actually tracked. It is a completely different experience that gives the driver more appreciation of the car one drives every day.

Anyways we had a great safe, fast, and fun weekend.

I have some in-car video that I hope to get online somtime this week.

Also took a ton of pics...here are a few of Robbie eating it up!

Blows when you spend 30min writing a post then somehow lose it.... I'll type it up again later in the day. For now, here's some pics.

We were thinking of you when we saw my friends (Skip) Si on the track.
The car has been completely re-worked....everything!

Motor look gorgeous, makes a ton of power...(conservative estimates of 250-300+ hp) light car, huge brakes, gutted interior...basically its a fun track car toy to play with. Did I mention the driver is 70 years old, wonderful guy to talk with, and is also very fast in the Honda?! PLus the color is right:)

Take it easy,

I would agree. Nice car, clean, which is a definate +.

I like the big brake kit...When I have a real car, if they don't come equipped, I will be forced to buy them.

Nice turbo setup, did you happen to ask him, what kit he has? Internals/etc?

Thanks...I liked the pics....made me smile.... 8)

Well, you can say he is one of those "I just take it to somebody/tuner and they prep the car for me" kinda guys. However, he was busy working on the car some and it performed perfect all weekend. Many of the HPDE or lapping weekends are filled with ppl who have a tuner prep the car.. There are lots of professional guys who show up pulling their $60K+ track car on a trailer from their new Dodge SuperDuper Diesel Duelly. (yea, I was jealous, heheh)

Some people are mechanically inclined and like to lap their cars, but many are not so inclined yet still like to get out there and lap their track cars. You find all kinds. (unfortunately, I probably fall in that latter category) I will say that its a must to have some knowledge of certain aspects of the car when it comes to handling and troubleshooting any different feedback when driving on the track. (sry, went a bit off-topic there...)

There was a lady in my class driving a VW Golf . She had great racing lines and had some rather high corner speeds. I talked with her later on and she was really cool. She has done a bunch of HPDE and told me to come to Road Atlanta for a challenging track. She was also a gearhead and was at ease working on her own car. (sry Adam, I probably shoulda got her phone# for you :D )

Anyways...I asked Skip last year more about his car. He said all of the internals have been blueprinted, balanced, replaced with higher quality parts and mapped with the turbo. While he didn't tell me the exact types of pistons or cams, it surely seemed like it was a winner take all approach and done by a tuning shop that really knows their stuff. The car is also totally gutted out, and the fuel cell is in the far rear of the car. I can probably e-mail him for more information..want me to try?

I will point out something. At the high speeds that you encounter at a track, its sometimes better that you have a true professional tuner/race shop prep your car. Of course the best scenario is for one to be able to do the work themself and then have a shop prep the car for loose ends and safety aspects.

To make a short story long....About 5 years ago Skip was lapping the car at Mid-Ohio. He got on the back straight at full speed (120+mph?) and when he stood on the brakes they decided not to work; foot went to the floor and he did a jump that would make the Duke brothers proud, cleared most of the sand trap and went right into the guard rail. He suffered broken ribs and shoulder. Brake pins "fell out".

Lapping IS hard on your car. Brakes, engine, turbo and tires generate LOTS of heat and puts them to the limit. I could barely get close to my tires or brakes due to the extreme heat. Car prep is re-enforced at the school for good reason.

I rambled on a bit there (hope I answered your question above?) but was thinking of things as I was writing.

Truly,

Good write up and great pics, Davis/Robbie. My car can handle the drag strip and the auto-x, but I don't think I would trust it on an all out race on a track like that for the obvious reasons stated above.

Sounds like a great experience though...looking forward to the vids... 8)
