Halfway down the front page, there are claims that someone knows the cars, and it was all a publicity stunt.

Nice po car. Good snag, I haven't seen that one.

STi police cars are fairly common in Australia and NZ. They have been useful in high-speed chaces. Unfortunately the STi and EVO's are also the most sought after by theives too.

really i think it makes sense.. it'd be better than using those gas-hog Dodge Durango's that the state police got now

No offense to Davis or Robbie, but turbochargers and AWD are not good for gas mileage.

Not if you keep your foot out of it. I get 20MPG around town with spirited driving. I can get 24MPG on the interstate. :) What does a Durango get?

Yeah, but your engine is only 2 liters. A 5.7L Corvette with another 75 HP gets 29 on the highway. The new ones have 6L (400 HP) and get 28, I believe. 24 MPG is not good, even if it is better than a Durango. I'm not ragging on you guys, but if you do decide that you just can't take the bad gas mileage anymore, I would gladly take over on that fuel bill. Point being: Though an STi would get better mileage than a Durango, it's still not drastic. The only police officer that doesn't drive spirited is one that doesn't drive at all. They are possibly coming out with Magnum police cruisers, which will have high HP Hemi's (I know that the Hemi is just marketing hooplah) that can shut down one bank of cylinders for better mileage. Also not a bad idea. However, even if you don't get great gas mileage, an STi would smoke all the Crown Vic's and Durango's you could throw at it. We have a Z28 here, though, so unless we're out some country road or racing from a stop, the STi probably wouldn't get too far.

*edit* I just looked and saw that you get 18 and 26, which isn't too bad.

Troy is right on this....

compared to other 4 cyclinder cars...the EVO and STi pretty much suck when it comes to mpg.

I get between 25-30 mpg on interstate.

18mpg of spirted driving.

5-7 mpg at Mid-Ohio Raceway

However, I should say that even with 93 octane at around $2.02-2.18, its nothing to what I use to have to buy when I lived in sweden....$4.30-$5.00 a gallon. (yes, thats transfered from liters to gallons correctly)

So I won't complain at all bout gas prices or mpg round here.

Awd kills mpg. B/c of the parisitic loss due to the extra drivetrain components. I.e powering 4 wheels vs 2.

Actually forced induction increases mpg. This is of course assuming you aren't WOT 100% of the time. Boosted cars are normally in vacuum during regular driving conditions just as a normally aspirated car. The turbo isn't creating postive pressure but is still spinning. This helps add a little more air and under idle or long highway cruises uses less gas.

I used alot less gas. B/c before I had to wind it out to 6-7k just to get going. Where after the turbo, I could get the same result around 3-4k. Less Rpm, less gas....... 8)

My brother had a 4.3L S-10 that he supercharged (see atabo.com), and he said that he also got better gas mileage assuming he didn't raise hell all the time. He eventually rebuilt the whole engine and drove for only a short while before selling it for $3800. He didn't tell the guy it was supercharged til he came to pick it up. I bet that dood thought he won the lottery or something lol.

lol...yeah, we're lucky when it comes to gas prices here. I wish I could find a Shell station, I want some of that V-power premium. There is a Sunoco around here that has a 94 octane pump. I think it's 10% ethanol, though :( . If you watch the Top Gear review of the Ford GT, he talks about gas mileage being 4 MPG on the track. Over there, that's like $1.25 a mile lol.
*edit* In a Ford GT, it's probably worth it. That'd be hella fun.
