I think you might be confused....

http://www.gmail.google.com is a new email client. It is in the trial version right now. Users are askes to test it and when you are sent an invite you may sign up and are allowed to have an invite. I forgot about mine, I just invited justin so he can have an account. There is 1gb of free space online. Very nice. 8)
