Don't you have to double clutch with straight cut gears?

Don't you have to double clutch with straight cut gears?
If you were downshifting.....more like revmatching.... 8)

I've never driven a car that you had to do it in. but from my understanding.... No. You are incorrect. However, I may be wrong.

This is my understanding...someone please correct me if I mis-state this.
Double clutching is the term used for downshifting only.
Rev matching is the term used for upshifting.
Neither is really used in vehicles today b/c of the way the transmissions are designed. We have syncros and helical cut gears vs straight cut.
I am going to do a little research and find out for sure....stay tuned... 8)

Double-clutching is the proper way to downshift at
speed without placing excessive wear on the transmission's.
The object of double clutching is to match the speeds while downshifting of the various shafts, gears and splines before engaging the next ratio
Makes shifting faster and rev-matching much easier. ... thus dropping your lap times and make rev-matching faster and easier
Just a few examples...... 8)

hmm,
I did some testing for a vintage race team driving an old mini cooper (old body style 20+yrs old, just like in the video above) on a ex-F1 racetrack in Sweden (http://www.arc.nu/banan.asp ). The car was soo much fun to drive.
Extremely light, (maybe 1800lbs/800kilos or less) incredible brakes, direct handling, and 4 short straight cut gears. Top speed was about 85mph tops ,hehe.
As far as the tranny went, it was fairly straightforward to use.
On downshifting I would rev-match by doing some heel-toe'ing while going from 4-3 or 3-2.
On upshifting, it was very easy to just touch the clutch a bit and throw the gear into place. No waiting around for the synchro to mesh correctly or anything. (unlike getting into 1st gear at speed on the AutoX course in my STi)
The best part of the car was its crazy handling. During the race, my friend could easily out handle much higher powered cars, plus dive deep into corners since you are only bringing a 1800lb car down from speed.
Brakes were upgraded for endurance racing. They were hard as a rock, and had nearly no travel to the pedal.
Adam's last post above seemed to have the right definitions of rev-matching (I call it heel toe) and double-clutching. Well done.
In my experience double-clutching is really only useful when going into first gear (2-1) at higher speeds yet you have to learn how to do it really fast or you'll take too much time on the AutoX course or racetrack.
Oh yea, and for those wondering....that mini is a FWD car

I believe the old minis were around 1500lbs. Had a small 1300 cc (77cu.in) engine that in race trim made up to 100hp. (productions versions was around 75)
Due to their tiny wheelbase and 9-10 inch diameter wheels, they were able to do some rather amazing manuvers. I agree, I've never seen one do a near endo!

yea that was some crazy driving.. Looks like he was able to lock his front wheels up, so he could spin around the pylons.. and that stoppie was sweet 8)

I believe like someone earlier said they were fwd so locking the front brakes up would stop him.
