Almost bought Lilly a PS2 today, but ended up getting her a new LeapPad Plus Writing and some accessories for $120 instead.
Still considering one for Christmas, though. I was looking at the PS2, primarilly because there really isn't anywhere for her to play where we live. I thought, with the Eye-thingy (camera) and DDR pad, she could burn some energy inside the house, and we could get a fighting game to play together.
Is there a reason to consider the Xbox? Keep in mind, its primarilly for a 4 year old girl. I might play it some, but my preferrences aren't a major factor.

umm.. since it doesnt really matter to you, i would say go with the ps2 because it having a smaller controler.. it would be much easier for her to play.. and it has alot more games to buy so you could find ones that were more for her... 8)

Thanks, Joe, I didn't even notice that.
I also noticed, while the Xbox has some sweet games, the PS2 has a bigger selection of kid-friendly games.
if youre buying it mainly for your child i'd go with the gamecube. nintendo is and allways has had more children based games than anyone else. my little cousin plays his all the time.

Ps2 would be the way to go for a young kid because since it plays all the old PS1 games also and you can pick those up for as cheap as $5.

Does the Gamecube have games that will allow her to burn off some of her energy? You can't even begin to imagine how much she has stored up from day to day. Thats why I want to get her a DDR pad and that eye camera thing.

There are alot of games for the PS1 and PS2 geared toward children and since you can combine the libraries of both consoles that equals a very very large game library.
Dave's right, the ps2 alone has way more titles than the gamecube has, and you can pick up ps1 games for next to nada.. not real sure as to what kinda children related games there is out for the ps2, never really looked into it.. i know the gamecube pretty much revolves around 'cartoony' type games. But nintendo allways has.

if you cant have Super Mario Kart, Crashes Nitro cart is pretty cool especially multi player. If my wife can play it any kid can.
