8) It was pretty damned fun, although it made my ears ring worse than I've ever had them ring before....can't imagine being on a battlefield

My "Big Brother" in the Fraternity built an AR15 from components. You should have seen us test firing it for the first time. We had it wedged between some rocks with a string tied around the the trigger. Everything worked out.
Great to hear you're having a good time with the Fraternity!

I've got a sniper SKS for sale...1000 yard shooter.
AK's are fun, but they pull up or rise alot on full auto. For reliability they are the best.

The round might travel a thousand yards, but you're going to be 30+ feet away from the intended target. You probably couldn't even sight in from a thousand yards. The furthest we ever qualified from was 500 yards, in the prone position, and even then, the human body looks the size of a pencil eraser. I was an expert marksman every year, and from 500 yards, I could only hit 5-6 out of 10. From 1000yds, it would be total luck if I hit 1 out of 30. And an SKS doesn't even have the rear sight adjustments an A2 has.

Very true...gotta hold rather high to hit the intened steel target. (I have a big old scope to lob the shots in)
For real good shoting, I'd take a M1A1 anyday. (my M1 is decent but doesn't have the accuracy.)
Ar-15's are fun. Light and accurate if there is no wind and somewhat close IMHO.
Well done on the Expert shooting. That is not an easy qualification to do! Too bad you are moving. Would've been fun to get some shooting sometime.

For sniper (1000 + yards) wind isn't as critical as tempurature/humidity... 8)

Ummm, I'd rather shoot with no wind, especially if its a smaller (.223) caliber round. Heat thermals and "heavy" humidity air does have an effect and one needs to compensate correctly for it, but wind is usually not steady and can really make a difference in hitting the intended target...at least with my experience. I like .308 and 30-06 for heavy hits espeically in more difficult weather.
Personally, I like pistol stuff. I do combat shooting in .45 (IDPA) at Fort Harmar. Hardly ever shoot further than 30 yds there:). Some members in our group are Camp Perry regulars...interesting stuff for sure.
Are we still on subject? heheh...Ak's are still fun.

Wind certainly is a factor, but I believe he is referring to humidity/density having an affect on the parabolic rise and fall of the round, and a slight reduction in velocity.

Exactly.
We have two officers that have attended numerous sniper schools. I have learned a great deal from there conversations and practices. 8)

I knew him and his brother and some other Vienna officers did pretty good in a pistol shooting contest verses some other local law enforcment departments.

Yes, they all attend a shooting match once a month during the summer. They are all ranked within the county.
Its actually pretty cool. Like you see on tv, the ones where you run and shoot @ targets, if you have ever seen the movie Swat, very similar to that.... 8)
