This has before and after video, plus various angles and microphone locations. If you don't want to see it, don't download it. It was meant for Alero owners to use as a reference for that particular intake, but I think the sound difference is a good reference point for anyone planning to open up a stock intake. Enjoy :D

oh yeah, the intake is an AEM Short Ram for a 2.4 Cavalier Z24, which we decided to get in red.

I am sure you guys are going to think I am biased when I say this...but I have never heard a better intake growl than a short ram intake on a Dohc Vtec motor. I do have others to back me up on this....I just didn't record it before I switched over to my turbo setup....sadly that is one of the biggest things I miss.... :(

After watching that vid, I was surprised it would sound that decent. Other than it being an autotragic, it wasn't bad at all....

Well, it's my fiancee's car, so an auto isn't too bad...though she wants a manual, too. There is at least one engine setup that I like better than the VTEC sound, and that is a Subaru boxer engine with an open intake. The sound is so pronounced, like each cylinder firing makes a rounded, clear sound. Though VTEC, VVT, etc are good ideas, I'm not a huge fan of them. I like low-range every bit as much as I like top-end, and I use the low-range much more often. I think that the new idea of shutting down some of the cylinders when cruising is great, as you still have low-end but get great gas mileage. I just wonder what THAT does to the intake/exhaust sounds? Anyways, I'm glad you found the vid a little entertaining...it seems people hate domestic compacts but love the imports. Her car has the base engine and has as much power as a Civic Si. (no offense Adam  ) Well, 5 less HP I think.

lol...no offense taken...my car is far from the best or fastest out there...and trust me I know that. although I did get that hp from a stock 1.6l N/a car...which isn't all that shabby.... 8)

just out of curiosity, what kind of gas mileage do the upper-end Honda engines get? We used to be able to get 32 mpg out of my fiancee's 3.4L V6 Alero she had (why we got another one we'll never know), and it had 170HP and 200 Lb.Ft. stock, and we added a 2.5" cat-back with straight-through muffler and a HUGE warm air intake. That car was a pretty good sleeper minus the exhaust sound lol. With just the intake, we got a 0-60 of 6.71 on the G-tech (yeah, i know it's supposedly lame to quote a G-tech) on a cold day. Her trans started going crazy soon after and it was never the same. On a hot-ass day, she got a 7.13 (i think) with the intake and cat-back, but her trans shifted 500 RPM's before redline and shifted quite slowly, as you can tell in the video from our website. The dealership never figured out what was wrong and eventually, I got rear-ended by a Tractor trailer on I-64 at the Nitro exit/on-ramp in it and it was gone. Well, at least the new one looks better lol. If you wanna se something goofy we did last night with a 7-color LED and her shifter, right click and save as (http://atabo.com/alerogear.wmv). A little "ricey" maybe, but interesting nonetheless lol.

I never really did the math...I think I have an 11 gallon tank, and the best I ever did was 300 miles on that tank....seems around 27 miles a gallon....average I guess....?

Btw...I quoted G-tech times...from what I hear they are rather accurate within a few tenths and +/- 2 mph. 8)

ShortysTRM

yeah, I'm pretty positive that their times are fairly accurate...I have noticed that you don't have to get all the way to 60 to get a reading since it uses an accelerometer. I've never used the "dyno" on it, but I have my doubts about it. I have the old G-tech.

Feedman

Yea thats what I was using. The dyno part is only as accuarate as the numbers you give it, such as how much your car weighs and what not.... I do know the 1/4 et and the skidpad function are relativly close, butlike you said...the dyno isn't as close...but its only to serve as a ballpark figure anyway.... 8)

IF.... on a flat stretch of road. Where did you do the runs? It's best to run the stretch from both direstions and average the two times.

The 3.4 V6 is a proven GM motor I know theres not too many of them but this motor has been around for a while. It is the ohv one right? It started out as the 2.8l which was in everything from the Cav to the s10 then it was refined and punched out to a 3.1 then 3.4 now the latest version is the 3.5. I am glad GM has stuck with the OHV design hey stick with what you know best right? You dont get the high revs but you do get the low end power. Besides the LS6 GM also has the 3.8 S/C in its stable and all are nice smooth motors.

I don't know what I would do with an engine that didn't rev past 6k....

it is weird getting used to v-8's that dont rev as high as my last hondas did.....oh well 4 more cylinders and 3.4 more liters of displacement was worth it...

you are entitled to you opinion. But I am not only stating my opinion but many others as well. Whenever I had my short ram on my Si, many friends and people I didn't even know would compliment me on the unique sound.... 8)

Maybe 350 a tank unless you have a small nuclear reactor inthat!
