View Full Version : Tearing apart my Talon

I hate relying on people for rides, so I've decided to go ahead and rebuild my car into stock form so I can have a good daily driver. So my dad told me he'd give me all the money to do it for Christmas, and today Adam and I are going to go out in the cold and start tearing down my Talon to see what the damage score is. I already know that it's going to need valves, springs, lifters, rockers, timing belt, crank pulley, and rear motor mount. Also I'm going to go ahead and replace the clutch while I'm in there. I'm pretty sure it's going to need some pistons/rings, maybe go ahead and get some rods and cams while I'm in there, and a 75 shot nitrous  ...knowing my dad he'll want to do some headwork too, though I just want a stock car, cause I know a car like that will never be fast and I hate to see him waste his money when he could just give it to me for the CRX 8)
wish me luck...I'll post up the carnage.

If you have to do that much work why not just get a motor set and just replace it all. It will be a lot easier and may be cheaper also.
But if you decide to do the rebuild good luck. :D

oddly enough, it is hard to find 420a's in good condition for cheap...if I needed a 4g63t, this would have been over months ago for less than a grand. :?

Call this company, I got a tranny for my 420a when I had my Mitsu. I dont know if they have any or not but They were the cheapest around and the tranny was in excellent shape.

Well we removed alot of the vacuum lines/sensors and valve cover.
Drained the coolant and removed some hoses. Tomorrow we don't have to stand in the cold, we get a heated garage....
So out comes the engine/tranny....whoo...
Wish us luck....
I will post some pics..... 8)

that old 91 talon that i have in huntington has a 4g63t in it, i would sell the whole car for 400 dollars if you had some way to go pick it up, then you could have interior parts and rebuild that motor

Yea, but from what Justin has told me, its a pain in the A to swap engines and what not.....
Not as easy as one would think..... 8)

Yea, the only two I know of were in town...lol. The one from Marietta that was lowered, she finally got some rims...eh...
The other guy that bought the car from some dude was in town too, Joel as Justin mentioned.
My car won't be back on the road until sometime in Spring...b/c thats how long it will take me to work on it and get it the way I want. Its not going to roll out until I am happy with it...and that is going to take a while...
I will keep everyone posted.... 8)

got the engine/tranny combo completely pulled this afternoon, a lot easier than I thought it would be....probably would have been a lot harder if we didn't have a forklift
Tomorrow I am going to try and get the head/tranny pulled off and see what I have to work with, then order the parts.... I'll be sure to take some pics of the build process once the parts come in.
I can't understand why it would take more than a day to swap an engine unless you ran into a lot of problems...it was like cake
Thanks to Adam and Adam, and Gary for helping me

Congrats on getting a start on your project, glad to hear progress is being made.

Swapping for an identical engine is one thing, swapping for a totally different one is another. If you know your wiring, have EVERYTHING you need and run in to absolutely NO problems whatsoever (highly unlikely), you can swap a B16 in to an EG Honda in about 10 hours from what I've seen.
Most times, people run in to problems.
Anywho, good luck!

i dont see why you want to go with the 420a anyways.
unless you rebuild and turbo it, but then again, im a boostaholic.
i remember that eclipse with a built garrett 420a in pburg monthes ago, it was like, sparkly orange and junk,
anyone know that guy?

$$$. I always hate people with that mentallity. Its like, why are you even fooling with a talon, when you could have a z06 [insert 50K + car here] ? Jesh, what a waste of time....

I'm rebuilding it cause i still owe 2k on it....and I don't like paying on something I can't drive. I bought a nonturbo car cause i just wanted a daily driver to get me back and forth to work and school. It's not like I can just stick a 4g63t in it and call it a day. I've got a project car that will be quick, I don't want two.

What attitude are you talking about?
I have a talon, not a 50k car. wtf do you mean.
I am merely stating, you can do a Turbo4g63 swap, for the same price as a rebuild on the 420.

That wasn't directed @ anyone in particular. You seem like a pretty cool guy. I am just stating that alot of people always ask"its just a civic". I say...work with what ya got....and make what ya have work.... 8)
Converting a 420a to a 4g63 turbo isn't as easy as you would think....you might as well drop a b18 in it, just as "easy".... 8)

it would cost like umpteen billion dollars to swap a 4g63t in that car. All new motor mount spots, transmission, wiring, computer, everything chief....you could just as easy swap a honda engine in it, it would be the same difference.

Arent you just puttin it together for a daily driver tho, an buildin the crx?

that's affirmative
then who gives a sh|t if your talon is a bone stock or no.. i built my stang a lil, but not to be no race car.. just to drive while im doin excessive modifications to my other one.

Finally got the head off tonight after I helped put on Jordan's neons...The pistons are only slightly scratched on the intake valve side, but they will be replaced regardless. What I'm not liking though is the fact that there was like a 1/4 inch of nasty on top of each piston. I'm not sure if it's cause the valves got bent and the engine kept dumping a lot of fuel or what, or if it is just buildup over 15000 miles (when the last head was put on by previous owner) of hard abuse. So as long as my dad pulls through, Monday I'm going to order new timing belt stuff, new valvetrain, and new pistons. Hooray for new parts. Hooray for not paying 350 dollars a month for a car I can't drive.
While I'm at it, I think I'm going to order new carpet, a new sub/amp, a new LCD so I can mold in into the dash (i sold my other one), maybe some Eibach Sportlines, and a new driver's side door handle from where someone tried to break in.
Oh and a el cheapo ebay intake cause I lost my last one somewhere in Reno
